Women's Soccer Plays Two In Charleston
09/04/2014 | Women's Soccer
After a week to train, the Richmond women's soccer team will be back in action this weekend, with a pair of games in Charleston, South Carolina. The Spiders will play at The Citadel in a 4 p.m. Friday kickoff before heading to Charleston Southern Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. These games are part of the Nike Tournament, co-hosted by the Bulldogs and Bucs.
This will be the first meeting in women's soccer between the Bulldogs and Spiders, while the Spiders lost their only all-time meeting with CSU, a 2-1 result on September 4, 2009 in an early-season tournament game hosted by Longwood.
Richmond is 1-2 at this point of the season, with all three games taking place on the road. Junior goalkeeper Emily Kelly (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) set a new career high with nine saves in last Friday's loss at No. 3 Virginia. The Spiders split their opening road weekend, getting their win at Longwood on Sunday, August 24 in a 2-1 result.
The Spiders have played 22 players so far this season, with 20 of them playing in multiple games this season.
The Citadel has started 3-1, with all three wins coming at home against USC Upstate, South Carolina State and NJIT.
Charleston Southern is also 3-1, winning both games at home the previous weekend, over South Carolina State and NJIT as part of the opening weekend of the Nike Tournament.
UR and North Florida are the rotating opponents in this weekend's games. The Spiders will have two more games on the road remaining until they make their home debut on Friday, September 19 against Princeton.
