Carrigan Nets A-10 Rookie of the Week
09/08/2014 | Women's Soccer
Redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference's women's soccer Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Carrigan scored two first-half goals in Richmond's 3-1 Sunday win at Charleston Southern to win the second weekend of the Nike Tournament. It was the second time this season she scored two goals in a game, posting both scores in the 2-1 win at Longwood on August 24.
Carrigan is the first Spider to scores two goals twice in a season since Becca Wann did the feat twice in September 2012. Carrigan missed all of her true freshman season of 2013 after suffering an injury in the preseason last year, making this her first collegiate year of soccer.
Her four goals leads the Spiders and represents 25 percent of the team's scoring last season, already through just five matches.
This is the first A-10 weekly honor for a Spider in nearly three years. Wann was Player of the Week on September 12, 2011 and Richmond's first Rookie of the Week since Wann won it November 1, 2010.
The Spiders will be part of the NSCAA.com's National Women's Soccer Game of the Week when they play at William & Mary Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
