Terry Allen, ShawnDre Jones Named Preseason All-A-10
10/20/2015 | Men's Basketball
The Spiders were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll.
A native of Houston, Texas, Allen is a dynamic forward on the floor for Richmond. Last year, he finished second on the team with 13.0 points per game and led the squad with 6.7 rebounds per contest. He ranked ninth in the A-10 with 5.1 defensive rebounds and finished 12th with 1.4 steals per game. Allen led Richmond with seven double-doubles, including six in the last 10 games of the season.
His ability to score from the low post, rebound, steal and run the break as a 6-8 ball-handler make Allen a terror for opposing scouting reports. Allen is just 61 points away from becoming Richmond's 44th member of the 1,000-point club.
Jones will step into Richmond's lead guard role after the departure of All-Conference and three-point scoring leader Kendall Anthony. Jones was named Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year after last season where he averaged 10.3 points off the bench. Jones led UR with 90 assists and 64 threes, posting a team-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.25.
An emotional and outspoken floor leader, Jones will provide veteran tutelage to an otherwise younger backcourt.
The Spiders return 72.2 percent of last year's minutes and 66.7 percent of last year's scoring with four starters back on the roster. Richmond finished last year's regular season on a six-game winning streak, taking fourth place in the final conference standings.
After being tabbed one of the “First Four Out” of the NCAA Tournament, UR took a one seed in the NIT and advance to the quarterfinals with wins over St. Francis and Arizona State.
The Spiders' defense was stout all last season, ranking third in the A-10 in scoring defense, third in three-point defense, third in steals and second in turnover margin. Richmond averaged just 9.9 turnovers a game which ranked 11th overall in the NCAA and set a new program record for fewest turnovers.
Over the last eight seasons, Richmond has won 80 conference games, more than any other Atlantic 10 school. Richmond is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer a losing season in any of the last eight years.
Over that same span, the Spiders have won 12 games against ranked teams, beating out every other Atlantic 10 team. Head coach Chris Mooney's 12 Top-25 wins rank higher than any other coach in Richmond history. Mooney begins his 11th season in 2015, making him the fourth-longest tenured coach in the Atlantic 10.
