Scouting Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons started the season with wins over UMBC and at Bucknell. Devin Thomas has led the way so far with 19.5 ppg and 14.5 rebounds per contest. Wake has outrebounded opponents by an average of 18.0 points per contest, with 38 of the team's 104 boards coming on the offensive glass. The Demon Deacons are playing without last year's leading scorer, Codi Miller-McIntyre, who suffered a broken foot in October.
Series vs. Wake Forest
Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Richmond, 40-12. The last two meetings have featured exciting finishes with the Deacons winning in OT in 2013 and then shocking the Spiders with a buzzer-beater tip-in last season. UR's last victory at Wake came in 2011 when the Spiders won, 70-62.
Offensive Explosion
Richmond has averaged 91.5 points in the first two games of the season, ranking second in the Atlantic 10 and 50th in the country in scoring offense.
According to KenPom, the Spider offense has an adjusted efficiency of 105.5 (58th in NCAA) with a 61.2 effective FG percentage (21st in NCAA).
253 points is the most points that Richmond has scored through the first three games in the Mooney era.
Career Efforts
While Richmond's offensive efforts have been tremendous up and down the lineup, a pair of 27-point performances from Terry Allen and T.J. Cline have made headlines. Allen tied his career high with 27 against JMU, while Cline set a new career high in his 27-point outburst against Stetson.
Along with points, Cline set new career-high marks for field goals (11) and field goal attempts (16).
Currently fourth in the A-10 in points, Allen has now scored in double figures in 20 of the last 21 games, dating back to last season.
Record Watch
After his hot start to the season, Terry Allen is just 19 points away from 1,000 for his career. He would become the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney.
Coach Chris Mooney is just 12 wins away from 200 victories at the University of Richmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just 10 behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.
Protecting The Rock
Richmond was very protective of the ball last season with a stellar backcourt and skilled frontcourt that rarely turns it over. Richmond finished second in the A-10 and 11th in the country for fewest turnovers with 9.9 per game, setting a new school record.
Through two games of the 2015-16 season, Richmond has 9.5 turnovers which ranks fourth in the A-10.
Fantastic Ball Movement
Richmond's frontcourt is asked to handle the ball a lot away from the basket and the Spiders usually have five players touch the ball on any one posession. Quick ball movement and sharp passes lead to open shoots and fluid offense. The Spiders rank 64th in the country with an assist percentage of 62.3.
Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record.
So far this season, Spider bigs are leading the team in assists with Allen and Cline both tallying eight dimes. Point guard ShawnDre Jones also has eight assists. Cline's assist-to-turnover ratio of 8.0 ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10.
Chicks Dig The Long Ball
One of Richmond's great strengths as an offense is the great array of strong three-point shooters. UR ranks second in the A-10 with 10.0 threes per game and a 41.7 percentage rate from long range. The Spiders hit 15 treys against Stetson, just one away from the Robins Center record.
Four players have already connected multiple times with Jones (6), Cline (4), Wood (4) and Pistokache (3) all hitting multiple threes.
Strength At Home
Richmond is 81-19 at home over the last seven seasons, winning six of the last seven home games vs. ranked teams, including a double OT win over No. 22 VCU on 2/25.
Richmond's 16 home wins in 2014-15 is tops for the most wins in any single season at the Robins Center.
Who's New
Richmond has a number of newcomers and newly eligible players who redshirted last season. The most notable among them is Marshall Wood, a transfer from Virginia Tech who will add height and outside shooting to UR's frontcourt. He averaged 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds at VT during his sophomore year of 2013-14.
Redshirt-freshman Khwan Fore is back after earning a medical redshirt for a broken foot that he suffered just a week into last season. Fore scored two points in two games before getting hurt and comes back stronger and faster than ever. He's the fastest player on the team and recorded a 45.5” vertical on a two-step jump.
Another redshirt-freshman who will provide valuable depth is 6-10 forward Paul Friendshuh. He missed last year due to a knee injury.
True freshmen guards Jesse Pistokache (Mission, Texas) and Julius Johnson (Cocoa, Fla.) will battle for playing time at the guard position, while KoVien Dominaus (Columbus, Ohio) provides depth at the wing spot as a 6-7 forward who can shoot.
Best In The Atlantic 10
Over the last eight seasons, Richmond has won 80 conference games, more than any other Atlantic 10 school. Richmond is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer a losing season in any of the last eight years.
Over that same span, the Spiders have won 12 games against ranked teams, beating out every other Atlantic 10 team. Coach Mooney's 12 Top-25 wins rank higher than any other coach in Richmond history.
