UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - From 3:33 p.m. on Friday afternoon until 2:58 p.m. on Sunday, Spider athletic teams prevailed on field hockey turf, running trails, football and soccer fields as Richmond sported one of its best fall weekends ever.
On Friday afternoon, Richmond's field hockey team defeated Saint Louis on the road, 3-0, to secure the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Richmond (11-8, 7-1) captured its ninth regular season championship in field hockey since joining the Atlantic 10. UR finished the regular season as the A-10 statistical leaders in scoring margin, goals against average and assists. Spider field hockey will take on Davidson on Friday in the semifinal round of the A-10 tournament at Saint Joseph's.
Spider success continued Saturday morning at Mechanicsville's Pole Green Park, home of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Cross Country championships. The women's squad won the team championship by a single point, led by Tara Hanley's fourth-place overall finish. It marked Richmond's first cross country title since 2010 and fourth overall since joining the A-10. Head coach Lori Taylor was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
Just hours later and miles across town at Richmond's campus, the Spider football team took the field on a beautiful Homecoming afternoon. A crowd of 8,475 was on hand to watch the nationally-ranked Spiders win their seventh straight game and make a case for a top-five ranking in the national polls. Defensive back David Jones was named the FCS National Player of the Week after he made a CAA-record four interceptions and a fumble recovery in UR's 38-31 win over UAlbany. Richmond remains in first place in the CAA standings heading into the final month of the season.
On Sunday afternoon, Richmond women's soccer picked up a big win on Senior Day in Robins Stadium as the Spiders knocked off rival VCU in the final game of the regular season. Senior Ashley Riefner scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to secure the 3-2 win for Richmond.
