Scouting Longwood
Longwood is off to a 3-6 start and heads to Richmond on a two-game losing streak after falling to High Point and UMBC. The Lancers entered the season ranked sixth in the Big South Preseason Poll.
Kanayo Obi-Rapu and Lotanna Nwogbo lead the team with 15.2 and 15.1 points, respectively. Obi-Rapu ranks 16th in the country in made three-pointers (3.4) and 21st in three-point percentage (50.8).
Richmond native Khris Lane averages 11.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Obi-Rapu, Nwogbo and Lane are all shooting over 47 percent from the field.
Series vs. Longwood
Richmond is 3-0 all-time against Longwood with three games all played at the Robins Center in the last 10 years. UR won the last meeting in 2009, 65-52.
Nationally Known
Terry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from Jeff Goodman, Jon Rothstein and others on his recent play.
Allen ranks 23rd in the country with 21.1 points per game and is third in the conference with 7.9 rebounds per game. Allen also ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in steals per game with 2.13. He has tallied five 20-point games and two double-doubles this season.
Man Among Boys
Terry Allen was one of the best players on the court in the Las Vegas Invitational which featured Cal, West Virginia and San Diego State. Allen scored 54 points and had 19 rebounds in two games against nationally ranked teams. His 34 points and 13 rebounds against Cal set new career highs as he tallied his eighth double-double in the last 16 games dating back to last year. Allen also hit 17 free throws against Cal, the most by any Richmond player dating back to 1969.
He was named to the LVI All-Tournament team for his efforts. Allen was also tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, his first career A-10 weekly honor.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Richmond has averaged 81.8 points in the first eight games of the season, ranking third in the A10 and 55th in the country in scoring offense. The hot start is the most points through eight games for Richmond since 1980.
Richmond's scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.
Finishing Strong
Against both Wake Forest and Cal, the Spiders built double-digit second-half leads, only to see the favorites go on big runs late. However, when WF drew to within two and after Cal built a four-point lead with less than five minutes left, the Spider defense only allowed a combined two field goals in both games, outscoring the opposition, 24-9, to end the game. Richmond shot 15-18 from the free throw line to close those two wins.
Nerdy Numbers
The Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy's advanced statistics. UR's offensive efficiency of 111.1 ranks 29th in the country, while the team's effective FG percentage of 56.0 is 27th in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist 60.8 percent of made field goals, ranking 46th in the nation.
Richmond has only been blocked in just 4.8 percent of possessions, a mark that is 10th in the nation. Despite playing one of the national leaders in forcing turnovers in WVU and the SEC's top defense at Florida, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 14.6 per possession, which ranks 15th in the country.
Marshall, Marshall, Marshall
Redshirt-junior Marshall Wood has made an immediate impact after transferring from Virginia Tech before last season. He is averaging 11.4 points and 25.0 minutes per game as the first Spider off the bench.
Wood is a threat from long range with the second-most threes on the team as he is shooting 17-40 (.425) from long range.
From Sixth Man To Lead Man
Last year's Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, ShawnDre' Jones, has stepped up big as UR's next All-Conference-type point guard.
Following in the small but mighty shoes of Kevin Anderson, Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, Jones moves Richmond's offense with his speed, leadership and basketball savvy.
He is averaging 15.4 points per game with a 47.5 percent three-point percentage and a team-best 86.5 percent mark from the free throw line.
T.J., Point-Forward
T.J. Cline has a unique role on the floor for the Spiders. While he technically plays the five position on the floor, Cline acts like a point guard on offense much of the time. He handles the ball at the top of the key in traffic, distributing the ball and leading the team in assists. He is also a dangerous threat to shoot the three if a defense sags on him.
However, T.J. provides an excellent alternate option to Terry Allen's post game as Cline also possesses several patented scoring moves from the block with his back to the basket.
Rebounding Richmond
Richmond has been hitting the boards with a vengeance recently, outrebounding opponents in four of the last five games which included West Virginia, the nation's 14th-best rebounding team.
UR holds a rebounding margin of -1.1 on the season, and Terry Allen is third in the conference in rebounds.
Record Watch
Terry Allen reached the 1,000-point plateau with his 25 points against B-CU. He became the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney. With 1,108 career points, he's now 34th all-time and 17 points behind Greg Stevenson.
Coach Chris Mooney is just eight wins away from 200 victories at the University of Richmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just seven behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.
Pass...Pass...Pass...SCORE
Richmond's frontcourt is asked to handle the ball a lot away from the basket and the Spiders usually have five players touch the ball on any one possession. Quick ball movement and sharp passes lead to open shoots and fluid offense. The Spiders rank 46th in the country with an assist percentage of 60.8.
Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record. They followed it up with 18 assists at Wake Forest, 21 against Bethune-Cookman and 23 against UNI.
As a team, Richmond sports a 1.66 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks 11th in the country.
So far this season, Spider big T.J. Cline leads the team with 29 assists along with ShawnDre' Jones' 29. Their assist-to-turnover ratios of 2.4 rank ninth in the Atlantic 10.
From DOWNTOWN
One of Richmond's great strengths as an offense is the great array of strong three-point shooters. UR ranks second in the A-10 with a 40.1 percentage rate from long range. The Spiders hit 15 treys against Stetson, just one away from the Robins Center record.
While ShawnDre' Jones leads the team with 19 threes, Spider forwards Marshall Wood (17 threes) and T.J. Cline (11 threes) stretch the defense with their outside shooting.
Take Me Home Tonight
Richmond is 83-19 at home over the last seven seasons, winning six of the last seven home games vs. ranked teams, including a double OT win over No. 22 VCU on 2/25.
Richmond's 16 home wins in 2014-15 is tops for the most wins in any single season at the Robins Center.
Best In The A-10
Over the last nine seasons, Richmond has won 80 conference games, more than any other Atlantic 10 school. Richmond is one of just four A-10 teams to not suffer a losing season in any of the last eight years.
Over that same span, the Spiders have won 13 games against ranked teams, beating out every other Atlantic 10 team. Coach Mooney's 13 Top-25 wins rank higher than any other coach in Richmond history.
With Richmond's wins at Wake Forest and vs. Cal, the Spiders have won 18 games against power-conference programs in the last decade.
Whiz Kids
Richmond's basketball staff has not only been effective in winning big games, but continue to chart a unique course for running a program in this era of college basketball. The coaching and support staff have degrees from some of the top liberal arts schools in the country.
Richmond has received coverage for its approach to strength training, employing the omegawave and digital questionnaires to track body readiness and performance before and after each workout.
The Spider staff is also using advanced statistical analysis from video coordinator Calvin Hunt to self-scout in new ways, including foul percentage and foul scenarios and lineup efficiencies.
Richmond offensive and defensive systems take unique approaches to the motion offense and matchup zone defense that can best be described as the “Mooney system.”
