Spider Basketball GameDay - Presbyterian
12/21/2015 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond (7-3) plays its last home game of the calendar year on Tuesday against Presbyterian (5-6) at noon in the Robins Center.
Last week, T.J. Cline had a career-high five three-pointers as he tied a career high with 27 points to lead Richmond over Old Dominion, 77-61. The Monarchs defense came into the game allowing just 57.8 points per contest, which led Conference USA. Richmond blasted through that with 77 points on 57.4 percent shooting including eight three-pointers.
The Spiders enter the penultimate non-conference game on a three-game winning streak, all at home. Last season, UR put together a season-high six-game winning streak to end the regular season.
Terry Allen has led Richmond all year with his 20.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He is one of just two players in the NCAA to average at least 20 and 8.
T.J. Cline has been heating up from long range after hitting seven threes in the last two games. Cline is second on the team in points scored (16.2) and threes made (18), while ranking second on the squad in assists.
Richmond has quality wins over Wake Forest, Cal and UNI. Those three teams have a combined record of 24-7 with three wins over Top 15 teams.
Tuesday's game will be available on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network as produced by SpiderTV. Bob Black and Greg Beckwith will be on the headset. It will also be on the radio on ESPN 950 AM and 93.1 HANK FM. The audio will be streamed for free on RichmondSpiders.com.

Scouting Presbyterian
Presbyterian comes to the Robins Center with a 5-6 record, with three wins against non-Division I teams. The Blue Hose are led by DeSean Murray whose 21.5 points per game ranks 17th in the NCAA. Presbyterian averages 73.3 points per game and shoots 44.2 percent from the field.
Series vs. Presbyterian
Tuesday marks the first meeting between Presbyterian and Richmond. The Blue Hose have only faced two A-10 teams (St. Bonaventure, Davidson) in their program history.
All-American Candidate
Terry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from Jeff Goodman, Jon Rothstein and others on his play to start the season
Allen ranks 24th in the country with 20.7 points per game and is third in the conference with 8.5 rebounds per game. Allen is one of just two players in the NCAA that is averaging at least 20 points and 8 rebounds per game.
Allen also ranks 28th in the country in steals per game with 2.3. He has tallied six 20-point games and three double-doubles this season.
Dating back to last year, he has tallied 20 straight double-digit scoring games and has nine double-doubles in his last 20 games played.
Man Among Boys
Terry Allen was one of the best players on the court in the Las Vegas Invitational which featured Cal, West Virginia and San Diego State. Allen scored 54 points and had 19 rebounds in two games against nationally ranked teams. His 34 points and 13 rebounds against Cal set new career highs. Allen also hit 17 free throws against Cal, the most by any Richmond player dating back to 1969.
He was named to the LVI All-Tournament team for his efforts. That Monday, Allen was tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, his first career A-10 weekly honor.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Richmond has averaged 80.8 points in the first 10 games of the season, ranking fourth in the A10 and 58th in the country in scoring offense.
The most points scored in one season under Coach Mooney was 70.0 in 2012-13. Richmond's scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.
Finishing Strong
Against both Wake Forest and Cal, the Spiders built double-digit second-half leads, only to see the favorites go on big runs late. However, when WF drew to within two and after Cal built a four-point lead with less than five minutes left, the Spider defense only allowed a combined two field goals in both games, outscoring the opposition, 24-9, to end the game. Richmond shot 15-18 from the free throw line to close those two wins.
In other quality wins over Northern Iowa and Old Dominion, the Spiders didn't allow the opponent to draw within a 10-point margin in the second half.
Nerdy Numbers
The Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy's advanced statistics. UR's offensive efficiency of 111.8 ranks 26th in the country, while the team's effective FG percentage of 56.5 is 20th in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist on 62.3 percent of made field goals, ranking 28th in the nation.
Richmond has only been blocked in just 4.5 percent of possessions, a mark that is second in the nation. Despite playing one of the national leaders in forcing turnovers in WVU and the SEC's top defense at Florida, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 15.5, which ranks 30th in the country.
From Sixth Man To Lead Man
Last year's Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, ShawnDre' Jones, has stepped up big as UR's next All-Conference-type point guard.
Following in the small but mighty shoes of Kevin Anderson, Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, Jones moves Richmond's offense with his speed, leadership and basketball savvy.
He is averaging 14.7 points per game with a 45.1 three-point percentage and a team-best 85.0 percent mark from the free throw line.
T.J., Point-Forward
T.J. Cline has a unique role on the floor for the Spiders. While he technically plays the five position on the floor, Cline acts like a point guard on offense much of the time. He handles the ball at the top of the key in traffic, distributing the ball and leading the team in assists. He is also a dangerous threat to shoot the three if a defense sags on him.
However, T.J. provides an excellent alternate option to Terry Allen's post game as Cline also possesses several patented scoring moves from the block with his back to the basket.
Marshall, Marshall, Marshall
Redshirt-junior Marshall Wood has made an immediate impact after transferring from Virginia Tech before last season. He is averaging 10.4 points and 23.7 minutes per game as the first Spider off the bench.
Wood is a threat from long range with the second-most threes on the team as he is shooting 18-46 (.391) from long range.
Record Watch
Terry Allen reached the 1,000-point plateau with his 25 points against B-CU. He became the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney. With 1,146 career points, he's now 32nd all-time and 13 points behind Tom Green.
Coach Chris Mooney is just six wins away from 200 victories at the University of Richmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just three behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.
Ball Hawkers
Richmond was very protective of the ball last season with a stellar backcourt and skilled frontcourt that rarely turns it over. Richmond finished second in the A-10 and 11th in the country for fewest turnovers with 9.9 per game, setting a new school record.
Through 10 games of the 2015-16 season, Richmond has just 10.9 turnovers per game which ranks third in the A-10 and 31st in the country.
Pass...Pass...Pass...SCORE
Richmond's frontcourt is asked to handle the ball a lot away from the basket and the Spiders usually have five players touch the ball on any one possession. Quick ball movement and sharp passes lead to open shoots and fluid offense. The Spiders rank 28th in the country with an assist percentage of 62.3.
Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record. They followed it up with 18 assists at Wake Forest, 21 against Bethune-Cookman and 23 against UNI. UR has already had four games with 20 or more assists.
As a team, Richmond sports a 1.60 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks 17th in the country.
T.J. Cline (39) and ShawnDre' Jones (40) are the team leaders in assists. Cline's assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.4 ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10.
From DOWNTOWN
One of Richmond's great strengths as an offense is the great array of strong three-point shooters. UR ranks second in the A-10 with a 39.1 percentage rate from long range. The Spiders hit 15 treys against Stetson, just one away from the Robins Center record.
While ShawnDre' Jones leads the team with 23 threes, Spider forwards Marshall Wood (18 threes) and T.J. Cline (18 threes) stretch the defense with their outside shooting.
Take Me Home Tonight
Richmond is 85-19 at home over the last seven seasons, winning six of the last seven home games vs. ranked teams, including a double OT win over No. 22 VCU on 2/25.
Richmond's 16 home wins in 2014-15 is tops for the most wins in any single season at the Robins Center.
