Merry Christmas: Ben Edwards Added To Giants Active Roster
12/25/2015 | Football
Ben Edwards didn't have to wait until Christmas day to receive the gift he's been wanting since he started playing football. Thursday, on Christmas Eve, the former Spider All-Conference wide receiver signed a contract promoting him from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster of the New York Giants.
Edwards was in training camp with the Giants, but was released July 31 after injuring his hamstring. He was signed to the practice squad in mid-November. He is replacing Odell Beckham, Jr. who was suspended for one game for his actions in last Sunday's contest against Carolina. Edwards, who will wear number 83, is eligible to play in this Sunday night's nationally-televised game (NBC) at Minnesota.
In an article in the Newport News Daily Press, Edwards said, "It's surreal and humbling. Playing in the NFL is a deal you dream of growing up, and I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity." He caught 208 passes for 2,202 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Spiders - among the career top 10 in all three categories in the UR record book. He was named first-team All-Conference wide receiver in 2012 and 2013.
Edwards is the third former Spider on the current Giants' active roster, joining defensive lineman Kerry Wynn and defensive back Cooper Taylor.
