Spider Basketball GameDay - Texas Tech
12/28/2015 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas - Richmond basketball (8-3) travels to Texas Tech (9-1) for the final game of the non-conference season on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest Plus and has been picked up in the Mid-Atlantic region by MASN2.
Richmond and Texas Tech face off after the holidays as each team looks to extend winning streaks of four and eight games, respectively. UR is coming off a 30-point win over Presbyterian at home, while Texas Tech handed UALR its first loss of the season.
Terry Allen has led Richmond all year with his 20.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He is one of just two players in the NCAA to average at least 20 and 8.
Richmond's offense has averaged 17.5 assists per game and shot 49.4 percent from the field. The Spiders are on pace to shatter UR's single-season assist record of 548.
The Spiders have outrebounded opponents in six games and the team's rebounding margin is the highest that it's been in Mooney's tenure.
Tuesday's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest Plus and MASN2 with Craig Wells and David Collier calling the action. It will also be on the radio on ESPN 950 AM and 93.1 HANK FM with Bob Black and Greg Beckwith on the headset. The audio will be streamed for free on RichmondSpiders.com.

Scouting Texas Tech
Texas Tech has won eight games in a row, most recently defeating previously unbeaten Arkansas-Little Rock. The Red Raiders also have wins over Mississippi State, Minnesota and Hawaii. TT's defense allows just 63.9 points per game with a +2.7 turnover margin. The Red Raiders score from inside as they average just 5.5 made threes per game.
Devaugnta Williams leads the team with 14.2 points per game. Zach Smith is the leading rebounder at 7.0 per game.
Series vs. Texas Tech
Tuesday marks the first meeting between Texas Tech and Richmond. The Spiders have also played Presbyterian and Bethune-Cookman for the first time this year.
All-American Candidate
Terry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from ESPN, CBS, American Sports Network, Cox Sports and others on his stellar play to start the season.
Allen ranks 21st in the country with 20.5 points per game and is third in the conference with 8.6 rebounds per game. Allen is one of just two players in the NCAA that is averaging at least 20 points and 8 rebounds per game.
Allen also ranks 21st in the country in steals per game with 2.4. He has the most steals of any player in NCAA D-1 listed at 6-8 or taller.
He has tallied six 20-point games and four double-doubles this season.
Dating back to last year, he has tallied 21 straight double-digit scoring games and has 10 double-doubles in his last 21 games played.
Man Among Boys
Terry Allen was one of the best players on the court in the Las Vegas Invitational which featured Cal, West Virginia and San Diego State. Allen scored 54 points and had 19 rebounds in two games against nationally ranked teams. His 34 points and 13 rebounds against Cal set new career highs. Allen also hit 17 free throws against Cal, the most by any Richmond player dating back to 1969.
He was named to the LVI All-Tournament team for his efforts. That Monday, Allen was tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, his first career A-10 weekly honor.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Richmond has averaged 80.2 points per game this season, ranking third in the A10 and 60th in the country in scoring offense.
The most points scored in one season under Coach Mooney was 70.0 in 2012-13. Richmond's scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.
Texas-Bound
Tuesday marks Richmond's first regular season game in Texas since the South Padre Island Invitational in 2009 when the Spiders swept Mississippi State and Missouri for the tournament title. UR also played in San Antonio against Kansas in the 2011 Sweet Sixteen.
This trip is also a homecoming for several Spiders. UR's Terry Allen hails from Houston, Texas, while T.J. Cline is from Plano, Texas, right outside Dallas. Guard ShawnDre' Jones grew up in Richmond, but moved to Houston for high school where he attended Bush HS. Freshman Jesse Pistokache is also from Texas, hailing from Mission, Texas.
Richmond has more players from Texas (4) than any other state.
Finishing Strong
Against both Wake Forest and Cal, the Spiders built double-digit second-half leads, only to see the favorites go on big runs late. However, when WF drew to within two and after Cal built a four-point lead with less than five minutes left, the Spider defense only allowed a combined two field goals in both games, outscoring the opposition, 24-9, to end the game. Richmond shot 15-18 from the free throw line to close those two wins.
In other quality wins over Northern Iowa and Old Dominion, the Spiders didn't allow the opponent to draw within a 10-point margin in the second half.
Last year, 20 games were decided by five points or less with the Spiders going 8-12 in those contests. This year, UR has not allowed many nailbiters with Richmond winning the only game with a final margin of five or less.
Nerdy Numbers
The Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy's advanced statistics. UR's offensive efficiency of 112.1 ranks 24th in the country, while the team's effective FG percentage of 56.6 is 20th in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist on 61.7 percent of made shots, ranking 34th.
Richmond has only been blocked in just 4.3 percent of possessions, leading the country in that category. Despite playing one of the national leaders in forcing turnovers in WVU and the SEC's top defense at Florida, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 15.8, which ranks 39th in the country.
From Sixth Man To Lead Man
Last year's Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, ShawnDre' Jones, has stepped up big as UR's next All-Conference-type point guard.
Following in the small but mighty shoes of Kevin Anderson, Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, Jones moves Richmond's offense with his speed, leadership and basketball savvy.
He is averaging 14.2 points per game with a 42.9 three-point percentage and a team-best 82.9 percent mark from the free throw line.
Jones also ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5
T.J., Point-Forward
T.J. Cline has a unique role on the floor for the Spiders. While he technically plays the five position on the floor, Cline acts like a point guard on offense much of the time. He handles the ball at the top of the key in traffic, distributing the ball and leading the team in assists. He is also a dangerous threat to shoot the three if a defense sags on him.
However, T.J. provides an excellent alternate option to Terry Allen's post game as Cline also possesses several patented scoring moves from the block with his back to the basket.
Marshall, Marshall, Marshall
Redshirt-junior Marshall Wood has made an immediate impact after transferring from Virginia Tech before last season. He is averaging 9.7 points and 23.5 minutes per game as the first Spider off the bench.
Wood is a threat from long range with the second-most threes on the team as he is shooting 19-of-50 (.380) from long range. He will be yet another strong candidate for Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year after ShawnDre' Jones won the honor last season.
Record Watch
Terry Allen reached the 1,000-point plateau with his 25 points against B-CU. He became the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney. With 1,165 career points, he's now 29th all-time and 23 points behind Tom Tenwick.
Coach Chris Mooney is just five wins away from 200 victories at the University of Richmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just two behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.
On Pace To...
With the season about one third over, the Spiders are on pace to shatter a number of records.
UR is projected to finish with at least 579 assists, breaking the previous school record of 548. The Spiders are also projected to hit 939 made field goals, breaking the previous record of 922.
Richmond's rebounding margin of -1.0 is currently the best that it's been in the Mooney era by nearly four rebounds per game.
Terry Allen is on pace to score over 680 points this season which would rank third all-time in total points scored in a season. UR's last 20 ppg scorer was Curtis Blair (20.2) in 1991-92. Allen is also on pace to finish second for the most steals in a season.
Pass...Pass...Pass...SCORE
Richmond's frontcourt is asked to handle the ball a lot away from the basket and the Spiders usually have five players touch the ball on any one possession. Quick ball movement and sharp passes lead to open shots and fluid offense. The Spiders rank 34th in the country with an assist percentage of 62.3.
Richmond made 29 assists against Stetson, just two away from the school record. UR has already had four games with 20 or more assists.
As a team, Richmond sports a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks second in the league and 21st in the country.
ShawnDre' Jones (43) and T.J. Cline (39) are the team leaders in assists. Jones' assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10.
From DOWNTOWN
One of Richmond's great strengths as an offense is the great array of strong three-point shooters. UR ranks second in the A-10 with a 38.7 percentage rate from long range. The Spiders hit 15 treys against Stetson, just one away from the Robins Center record.
