Scouting Fordham
Fordham won its first A-10 game of the season on Saturday, dispatching Saint Louis, 83-65, at home. The Rams are 0-7 on the road this season and 1-9 in conference play.
The Rams average 64.5 points per game, but have shot just 28.2 percent from long range. Their 15.0 turnovers per game are worst in the A-10.
Fordham's Eric Paschall leads the team with his 17.4 points per game, ranking second in the A-10. He averages 14 field goal attempts per game and has 5.3 rebounds per contest. Ryan Rhoomes has 8.9 rebounds per game to lead the team.
Series vs. Fordham
Richmond has won the last eight games in the series with Fordham, leading it all-time 13-7. Last season, the Spiders swept the home-and-home, winning by 12 at home and taking a big overtime win on the road.
Richmond is 8-2 all-time against Fordham at the Robins Center
Nelson-Ododa Out Indefinitely
Richmond forward Alonzo Nelson-Ododa will be out indefinitely after he underwent surgery on Tuesday morning.
The surgery repaired a fractured bone around Nelson-Ododa's right eye. He was injured in the first half of Richmond's game against Rhode Island on Sunday after he received an elbow to the face going for a rebound.
The junior was also diagnosed with a concussion on Sunday night at the hospital.
Before leaving Sunday's game, he had grabbed one rebound in four minutes. Nelson-Ododa was averaging 7.0 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game.
VCU Statement
Richmond made a national statement with its win over No. 14 VCU on the road a week ago. The Spiders were featured as Andy Katz' team of the week on ESPN.com and Kendall Anthony received written accolades from writers around the country along with the A-10 Player of the Week award.
The Spiders snapped VCU's 12-game winning streak and tallied their 11th win over a ranked team since 2008. Richmond became the first A-10 team to win at the Siegel Center since January of 2013.
Schedule Still Strong
The Spiders have played one of the nation's toughest schedules, especially on the road. After the La Salle game, eight of Richmond's nine road games came against teams in the RPI Top 100, including seven against top 75 teams. Richmond has a SOS of 20 according to ESPN.
On the road, UR has a scoring margin of -4.6 with seven games decided by six or less.
Spiders Heating Up In A-10 Play
Richmond has played very well, especially offensively, in 2015. The Spiders have dominated at home in conference play and played the A-10's top teams on the road very closely.
Over the last nine games, UR has averaged 71.1 ppg with a scoring margin of +9.1. UR is shooting 47.9 percent from the floor while holding opponents to just 42.5 percent.
In five of the last nine games, UR has had four players in double figures. Against Davidson, three players scored 20 points for the first time this century.
In A-10-only stats, Richmond ranks third in scoring (70.7), second in FG pct (47.7) first in FT pct (75.5), third in 3PT FG pct (37.4), third in assists (14.8), fourth in steals (6.8), second in TO margin (+2.90) and second in assist/TO ratio (1.5).
Protecting The Rock
Richmond has been very protective of the ball this season with a stellar backcourt and skilled frontcourt that rarely turns it over. Richmond currently leads the A-10 and ranks ninth in the country for fewest turnovers with 10.0 per game.
The Spiders only committed four turnovers against Northeastern, the best mark since 3/14/13 when Richmond had a three-turnover game against Charlotte. Richmond followed that up with just five turnovers at Davidson, eight against George Mason and six against Davidson again. Although 12 turnovers were high by Richmond standards, they were the second-fewest against a VCU squad that prides itself on getting steals.
When Richmond does turn the ball over, they often do it in dead ball situations. UR only allows 10.7 points per game off turnovers and just 4.1 fastbreak points.
Free Throws Coming In Hot
Richmond went 20-23 from the line, including 12-12 in the final five minutes, in the win over George Mason on 1/8. The Spiders then went 18-22 from the line in the second half to seal a win at VCU. UR is averaging 14.5 made FTs per game in conference play and now rank second in the A-10 with a 71.6 team percentage.
After going 10-11 from the line against URI, Kendall Anthony is now third in the league with his team-best 81.1 percent shooting.
Alonzo Nelson-Ododa has drastically improved his FT shooting after going under 55 percent through his first two seasons. He now ranks fourth with an 81.0 mark. Terry Allen is fifth at 80.8.
Richmond is the only team with three players in the top 10 in FT percentage, while Allen and Nelson-Ododa are the top FT-shooting forwards in the league.
The Spiders have been clutch at the end of games, hitting 80.3 percent of their free throws in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime. UR went 10-of-12 over that stretch to seal a huge road win at VCU.
Strength At Home
The Spiders are 10-3 at home this year with some outstanding defense in those games. Richmond has held opponents to just 41.2 FG shooting and 57.2 points per game at the Robins Center.
Conversely, Richmond has shot 48.3 percent from the field at home with a 14.4-9.8 advantage in assists per game and a +4.8 turnover margin.
Richmond is 74-17 at home over the last six seasons.
