The Spiders won the turnover battle (16-11) yet again and converted them into 20 points. Richmond also went hard to the offensive glass, tying the deeper George Mason frontcourt with nine offensive boards and a 10-7 edge in second-chance points.
After battling to a halftime tie of 26-26, Cline scored the first five points of the second frame to give Richmond its largest lead. The Patriots responded with a 9-1 run to take a three-point lead and the teams were gridlocked for the rest of regulation.
A three from Josh Jones and steal and layup from Anthony put UR up 58-55 with 4:21 left. However, the Patriots were then beneficiaries of a number of foul calls, scoring all seven of their final points of regulation from the line on 10 attempts.
GMU shot 21 more free throws than Richmond on the game, including 27 attempts in the second half and overtime alone.
With Richmond down three with 16 seconds left, the Patriots elected to foul and Anthony hit two free throws to cut it to a one-point game. GMU's Marquise Moore then only hit one of two and Anthony was fouled on a drive to the basket with less than a second remaining. He hit both free throws to send the Spiders into overtime.
A three-pointer from Josh Jones in overtime gave UR a one-point lead, but Moore responded with a layup to put GMU back ahead. After a three-point attempt from Anthony rimmed out, the Patriots grabbed a rebound and hit three more free throws for the final margin of 71-67.
Richmond will remain on the road this week with a trip to Olean, N.Y. for a game at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night.
