
Hot First Half Not Enough For Spiders At Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A hot first half was not enough for the Richmond women's basketball team as it fell at the Duquesne Dukes, 58-51, in overtime Wednesday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Despite a nine-point lead at halftime, Richmond was outscored 28-19 in the second half and was held scoreless in the overtime period to drop to 16-10 overall and 8-5 A-10. Duquesne improved to 18-8 on the season and 10-3 in the league.
Despite the loss, Janelle Hubbard led both teams with 21 points as she surpassed her 700th-career point as a sophomore. The Glenn Dale, Md., native was 12 points away from hitting the impressive mark before tonight's contest.
Hubbard went 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range to lead both teams. Junior Lauren Tolson followed with 10 points and five rebounds.
Although Richmond was outrebounded, 52-36, seniors Genevieve Okoro and Liz Brown both brought down 10 rebounds a piece.
The Spiders got out to a hot start with the help of Hubbard. The sophomore was perfect in the first 20 minutes as she went 4-for-4 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe for 16 of her 21 points.
Richmond held the Dukes to 30 percent shooting compared to its 42 percent. The Spiders were 57 percent from behind the arc and forced 12 Duquesne turnovers, which lead to 10 points.
The Spiders went into halftime with the 32-23 lead and their largest advantage, 13, came at the 1:32 mark.
The Dukes came within five three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half. At the 11:07 mark, Duquesne hit four-straight points to make it a one-point ball game (42-41) with 7:15 to go.
The first tie came at the 3:45 mark at 46 and the two teams traded the next five points to force overtime at 51. Richmond was outscored 7-0 in the extra period for Duquesne to secure the win.
Richmond will be back in action when it continues on the road at Saint Joseph's Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
