
Wo Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime To No. 21 GW

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Despite sophomore Janelle Hubbard hitting a last-second three-pointer to force an extra period, the Richmond women's basketball team fell to the No. 21-ranked and top-seeded George Washington Colonials, 81-69, at the Robins Center.
Richmond (16-12, 8-7 A-10) was held to just one basket in overtime, as George Washington (25-3, 14-1 A-10) went 4-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the line to secure the game.
The two teams battled from start to finish as the score was tied four times with six lead changes. After back-and-forth play, the Spiders hit seven-straight points to take a six-point lead 12 minutes into the contest, which was the largest Richmond lead of the day.
After the two teams went into the break with George Washington up 33-29, the Colonials took the momentum in the second half. GW led by as many as nine at the 13:11 mark, but Richmond fought back making it a three-point game with 43 seconds to play.
Forcing to foul, two Colonial free throws upped the lead to five before Hubbard connected on a three at with 31 seconds on the clock. After Lauren Chase with 1-for-1 at the line, it was Hubbard again for two to make it, 64-63, George Washington.
After two-straight free throws from Lauren Chase again with nine seconds left, Hubbard hit a last-second shot over two GW defenders to force the overtime.
After Genevieve Okoro recorded her fifth foul with 30 second into OT for the second Spider to foul out, George Washington took back the momentum and secured the game with an 80 percent shooting percentage, compared to Richmond's 14 percent.
Hubbard led all players with 21 points, while three other Spiders hit double figures. Okoro followed with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Lauren Tolson tallied 12 points and had five rebounds.
Freshman Micaela Parson capped off the double-digit points with 11 for a career high, while matching her career-high six rebounds. She also picked up three steals and an assist.
The Spiders will be back in action to close the regular season at city-rival VCU Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
