Men's Basketball GAMEDAY: Saint Joseph's
02/27/2015 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - Richmond heads back out on the road this weekend for a crucial game at Saint Joseph's on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The Spiders (16-12, 9-6) have won three in a row and four of the last five as they are currently in a tie for fifth place in the A-10 standings. Saint Joseph's (12-15, 6-9) have been up and down in A-10 play, but are coming off a big win against UMass.
Richmond was flying high on Wednesday night after knocking off crosstown #22 VCU in double overtime. The Spiders led nearly all of regulation but a late three from Treveon Graham pushed the game in OT where UR needed an intentionally missed free and an in-bounds pass to T.J. Cline with less than three seconds left to force a second overtime where the Spiders would eventually triumph.
The win was head coach Chris Mooney's 200th career victory in Division I, and it marked the sixth win over a ranked team in the last seven tries at the Robins Center.
Saturday night's game will be produced by the A-10 Network and air on a variety of channels. CSN+ Mid-Atlantic will pick it up in progress at 7:30, while CSN Philadelphia and SportsNet New York (SNY) will provide full coverage. Away from the television, fans can watch through their SpiderTV subscription on the A-10 Digital Network. The game will be on the radio on ESPN 950 AM and 93.1 HANK FM with Bob Black and Matt Smith on headset. Sirius channel 108 and XM channel 201 will also pick up the radio broadcast. The audio will be streamed for free on RichmondSpiders.com.

Scouting Saint Joseph's
The Saint Joseph's Hawks are coming off a big road win at UMass on Wednesday night. They also have wins against Rhode Island and Davidson despite a league record of 6-9.
SJU is led by the A-10 leading scorer in DeAndre Bembry. Bembry averages 18.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. He also has a team-best 90 assists and has averaged a league-high 38.6 minutes per game.
Series vs. Saint Joseph's
Although Richmond picked up a big home win last season, the Hawks lead the all-time series, 15-7. In the teams' last meeting in Philadelphia, SJU won a 61-55 decision in February of 2013.
VCU Sweep
Richmond made headlines on Thursday morning after defeating nationally-ranked VCU for the second time this season in a double-overtime thriller in the Robins Center. UR became the first team to sweep the Rams in a season series since Northeastern did it in the CAA in 2010. It marked Richmond's 12 win over a ranked team since 2008, and the sixth win in the last seven games against a ranked team at home.
UR has been essentially HAVOC-proof, giving up a VCU season-low 12 turnovers in the earlier meeting on 1/31, and then not allowing a single fast-break point on 2/25.
Spiders Scoring Well In A-10 Play
Richmond has played very well offensively in 2015. The Spiders have dominated at home in conference play and played the A-10's top teams on the road very closely.
In A-10-only stats, Richmond ranks fifth in scoring (69.4), fourth in scoring margin (+6.2), third in FG pct (.456), second in FT pct (.715), second in 3PT FG pct (.373), first in 3PT defense (.276), fourth in assists (14.5), second in steals (7.5), second in turnover margin (+3.87) and second in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
Individually, Kendall Anthony is fifth with 16.7 ppg. Terry Allen is fifth in steals (1.7), and T.J. Cline is seventh in 3PT FG pct (.412).
Double-Double Machine
Junior forward Terry Allen has been running hot with increased aggressiveness recently. A mismatch problem for most teams because of his height and speed, Allen has averaged 14.3 points per game against A-10 teams, shooting 50.6 percent from the field in those 15 games, which include a 21-point performance against Davidson, a 20-point game against George Mason at home and three consecutive double-doubles against St. Bonaventure, George Washington and VCU
Allen has recorded 19 double-digit scoring games, including 14 of the last 16 and 11 in a row. He has a team-high four double-doubles this season and five in his career.
Sixth Man of the Year?
ShawnDre' Jones has become one of the Spiders' most valuable scorers as the first player off the bench. He has five-straight double-digit scoring games, capped by a 22-point effort against VCU on a career-high six threes.
Jones leads the team in three-pointers made (57) as well as assists (70), averaging 10.5 points in 28.6 minutes played. Prior to the season, Jones was named by Sports Illustrated as one of their Breakout Sophomore candidates.
Masters of Theft
In A-10 play, Richmond has mastered the art of the steal. The Spiders had a season-high 11 steals to force 19 turnovers at St. Bonaventure, then repeated the effort with 11 steals vs. GW. UR ranks second in the league with 7.5 steals in A-10 play.
Remarkably, it's been UR's frontcourt that has led in pilfers. Terry Allen has 1.7 (5th) spg in A-10 play, followed by Deion Taylor with 1.3 steals per game.
Protecting The Rock
Richmond has been very protective of the ball this season with a stellar backcourt and skilled frontcourt that rarely turns it over. Richmond is currently second in the A-10 and ranks 12th in the country for fewest turnovers with 10.0 per game.
The Spiders only committed four turnovers against Northeastern, the best mark since 3/14/13 when Richmond had a three-turnover game against Charlotte. The Spiders have committed single digit turnovers in 10 games and only gave up 12 against VCU in the first contest.
When Richmond does turn the ball over, they often do it in dead ball situations. UR only allows 10.6 points per game off turnovers and just 4.1 fastbreak points. In the home win against VCU, Havoc did not create a single fast-break point.
Spreading the Wealth
Richmond made a season-high 25 assists on 31 made baskets in the win over Davidson on 1/17, the most assists since UR's 26 in a win over UNCW on 11/13/12.
UR has only played two games with single-digit assists, and has won the assist battle in 22 of 28 games this year.
Richmond's assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.3 currently ranks second in the A-10 and 29th in the country. Against A-10 teams, UR is averaging 14.5 apg, ranking fourth.
