03/23/2015 | Baseball
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Richmond OF Michael Morman was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.
The honor is the first in the Richmond career for Morman, who transferred from Valparaiso prior to this season with two years of eligibility remaining.
“Michael has continued to play well all year,” head coach Tracy Woodson said. “He was on a hot streak this week and played very well against Minnesota and George Mason this weekend. Moving him out of the leadoff spot and in to the two-hole has been big. We look for him to keep producing at a high-level all year. Having coached him at Valparaiso, I knew how good of a player Michael is. Now, everyone is getting a chance to see it.”
In his five games last week, Morman batted 10-for-20 (.500) with two home runs, three doubles, nine RBI and seven runs scored. The highlight of the week came on Saturday, when Morman hit a walk-off grand slam to defeat George Mason in 10 innings in the team's A-10 opener.
On the season, Morman leads the Atlantic 10 in RBI (22), is tied for third in home runs (4) and is tied for third in runs scored (19). The Rockford, Ill. native is currently second on the team with a .329 batting average and has already totaled eight multi-RBI and eight multi-hit games this season.
The Spiders will be back in action on Tuesday when the team plays host to in-state rival William & Mary at 3 p.m. in Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Va.
