03/07/2015 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond men's lacrosse will finish off its five-game home stand to start the season but get the Southern Conference schedule started with a 1 p.m. Saturday contest against VMI at Robins Stadium. Admission is free for Richmond lacrosse this season.
The Spiders have dropped their last two games to teams either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls, which followed wins in both of the first two weeks of the season. Richmond (2-2) will host the first-ever Southern Conference game since the teams moved over from the Atlantic Sun last season.
Richmond lost 7-6 in its only overtime game of the 2014 season, in the regular-season finale at VMI. Current Spider and then-senior Keydet Mickey (Williamsburg, Virginia / Jamestown HS) scored five goals in the VMI win, their only victory of the ASun schedule. This season, the Keydets are 0-4 to this point, averaging a little over five goals per game. Brad Nardella and Mike DeBlasio lead the team with four goals each.
Richmond is led in scoring by Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Maryland), with 12 goals. Goldberg had three goals and an assist in the VMI game a year ago. Hofmeister is second in goals for UR, with eight goals. Richmond's defense has done a better job to the start of this year, allowing just eight goals per game through the first four games. Richmond has also been more accurate in shot selection. The Spiders have had nearly two-thirds of their shots (62.6 percent) on net this season, allowing opponents to shoot at a 56.3 percent clip.
Richmond has gotten out to quick starts this season, outscoring opponents 15-10 in the opening quarter this season.
