HARMONY, Fla. - The Richmond Spiders shot one-under as a team in Sunday's final round, capturing second place at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championships at Harmony Golf Preserve.
After ending Friday's first round in a tie for seventh, the Spiders surged into third place yesterday and then overtook Davidson for second place in today's final round.
UR shot 287 (-1) on Sunday as one of just two teams to go under par. The Spiders shot 867 (+3) for the tournament, finishing two strokes ahead of third-place Davidson. It marked the second-straight year that Richmond has finished runner-up at the conference championships.
"I'm happy with the way that we finished out the tournament with another under-par round today," head coach Adam Decker said. "We came up a little short of our ultimate goal of winning the title, but we showed a lot of grit in battling to finish second place this weekend. We had some outstanding performances from all of our players, especially from our freshman Matt Lowe over the last two days."
Freshman Matthew Lowe put together yet another tremendous round. He shot a 66 (-6) on Sunday, tying for the lowest round of the tournament. He finished his tournament at 209 (-7), placing second overall in the tournament. His 209 tied for fourth all-time at Richmond for best 54-hole score, and his final round of -6 tied for the third-best round at UR, just a day after posting a round of -5.
Lowe was awarded the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie award and also earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades.
Senior Danny Pizetoski joined Lowe on the league's All-Conference award list. In his final tournament of a decorated Richmond career, Pizetoski shot 75-71-75=221 (+4) to tie for 21st overall.
Junior David Germann finished top-5 in the tournament as he tied for fifth at 69-73-73=215 (-1). Germann tied his career-low tournament at the Atlantic 10 championships, playing in the final grouping on Sunday.
With Germann and Lowe's under-par final scores, Richmond was the only school with two players who finished under-par and two players in top five finishers of the tournament.
Sophomore Keegan Hoff moved up six spots on Sunday, placing 34th after shooting 73 (+1) in his final round. Hoff shot 77-75-73=225 (+9) for the tournament.
Senior Austin Romeo closed out his career with a three-day card of 74-77-76=227 (+11) to tie for 39th overall.
"I'm especially grateful to Danny and Austin for their outstanding contributions to our program throughout the years," Decker said. "We have a lot to look forward to next season, but we will certainly miss their presence on our team."
