JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Richmond Spiders track and field student-athlete Janel Francis placed 37th in the long jump at the NCAA East Regional Prelims on Friday, bringing an end to a very successful season for the Spiders.
Francis, the Atlantic 10 Outdoor champion and school-record holder in the long jump, placed 37th out of 48 competitors at the regional meet last week. Francis' A-10 winning mark of 6.15m ranked her 17th in the region and in the top-30 in the nation heading in to the prelims.
“Janel had a breakthrough year winning the Atlantic 10 Championship title and setting our program record in the long jump,” head coach Lori Taylor said. “She was consistent in the championships and her hard work throughout last fall benefited her during the indoor and outdoor seasons. It's been fun to watch her growth and development as the first Richmond athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Coach Ron Jones has guided her to realize the success she can achieve. We're already looking forward to next year.”
With the completion of the NCAA East Prelims, Richmond's 2014-15 track and field season has come to an end. The year was a very successful one for the Spiders, as the team placed second overall in the A-10 Indoor Championships – the best finish for the team since 2007.
In both the indoor and outdoor conference championships, the Spiders had three individual champions – Marisa Ruskan (Indoor Mile), Taylor Clevinger (Indoor 3000m) and Francis (Outdoor Long Jump).
The Spiders also had two relay teams earn A-10 titles – the distance medley relay team of Clevinger, Jade Gregory, Alyson McGonigle and Jill Prentice and the 4x800m medley relay team of McGonigle, Ruskan, Stephanie Hughes and Clevinger.
