UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Former University of Richmond Spiders baseball standout Matt Dacey has signed a professional contract with the Tampa Bay Rays this past weekend.
Dacey was selected by the Rays with the 13th pick of the 21st round in the 2015 MLB Draft. Dacey will report the Class A Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York Penn League.
“It's well deserved for Matt and we couldn't be happier for him,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said. “Matt had nothing left to prove at the collegiate level. We wish him the best moving forward and hope to see him in the big leagues in the near future.”
Dacey earned First-Team All-East Region and First-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors this past season after becoming just the third player ever to lead the A-10 in home runs in consecutive seasons.
After hitting 12 homers in 2014, Dacey clubbed 17 this past year, while batting .313 on the season. Dacey also led the A-10 in runs scored (56), while finishing second in total bases (129), fourth in RBI (52), third in walks (35) and second in slugging percentage (.652).
