Spider Soccer Plays Two Games In Charlottesville

Richmond women's soccer returns to action with a pair of games this weekend, at the Nike Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The Spiders will take on Delaware Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and turn around to finish the weekend against Cal Poly Sunday at noon. The games take place at Klockner Field, home of the Cavaliers. Richmond plays the first game of a doubleheader each day of the Invitational.
Richmond started the season with a 1-0 home loss to Campbell last Friday night at home. The lone goal of the contest came in the 80th minute. The Spiders outshot Campbell 14-10 in the contest and sophomore goalkeeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) posted six saves in the game.
“We continue to work on the same themes that we have been working on all year... quality possessions, keeping the ball and finishing,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “We were disappointed at the outcome on Friday and the players had the weekend to chew on that, which made for a very competitive week of training.”
Delaware is off to a 2-0 start, with wins over Loyola (2-1 in overtime) and Army West Point (2-0), with a pair of goals in both of their opening games. Keeper Kailyn Rekos has allowed just one goal in almost 200 minutes of game time, for a goals-against average of 0.45 so far this season. Three of the four Blue Hens goals were scored by Natalie Zelenky, who has taken 12 of the team's 26 shots through their first pair of contests. Delaware has allowed just 16 shots so far this season.
Cal Poly (0-0-2) has played to a pair of ties so far this season, giving that squad more minutes played than any other through two games. They started with a scoreless tie at San Francisco and played to a one-all tie at Saint Mary's Sunday. Keeper Alyssa Giannetti also has allowed just one goal in two games and four overtime periods, for a goal-against average of 0.41 so far. The Mustangs' lone goal was scored by Megan Abutin, on just three shots attempted. Cal Poly has been out shot 31-26 through two contests.
This represents the first two-game weekend for the Spiders, who will return home Friday night at 7:30 to face American University at Robins Stadium.
