UR Soccer Posts 4-0 Win Over Undefeated Delaware

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Four different Spiders scored goals as Richmond got its first win of the year by defeating previously unbeaten Delaware 4-0 Friday afternoon to start the Nike Soccer Classic in Charlottesville at Klockner Stadium. The Classic is hosted by the University of Virginia and continues into Sunday.
The win pushes UR's record to 1-1, dropping the Blue Hens to 2-1 on the year.
The two teams played a scoreless opening half, with the Blue Hens outshooting Richmond 9-5. Both sophomore keepers, Delaware's Kailyn Rekos and Richmond's Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) had to make point-blank saves in the first half, but kept the sheet clean.
“We have great finishers, but we have to play well in the middle of the field to be able to create the chances,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright.
“We were not as sharp as we are capable of being in the first half, so we got into them a little bit. I thought they played with a lot more energy and the passes were crisper and the game opened up for us.”
It was in the second half when the floodgates opened for the Spiders. Returning leading scorer and league Rookie of the Year Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) scored the team's first goal of the season in the 53rd minute. Just 20 minutes later, fellow sophomore forward Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) scored the second goal and a little more than two minutes later assisted on the third to lead the way with a goal and an assist. Senior forward Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) was credited with assists on the first pair of goals.
After being shut out in the opener last Friday, the starting forwards remarked that a bit of pressure had started to build.
“We felt when we got one, then the game would open up for us,” said Carrigan.
“We know when we get the ball, good things are going to happen,” said Riefner. “It's just a matter of connecting with everyone else on the field and once we did that, we got to play like our usual selves.”
“It's frustrating when you don't finish,” said Prillaman. “It's especially frustrating as a forward, because that's what we do. Once Meaghan scored that first one, we told ourselves to just keep doing it.“
Richmond's final two goals were the first of the career for freshman Bailey Cristian (Williamsburg, Virginia / Jamestown HS) and senior Hannah Holub (Cary, North Carolina). Holub's came in the game's final minute. That assist was from sophomore Emily Drummond (Midlothian, Virginia / Midlothian HS), her first career point.
The Spiders finished with 13 shots, giving up 16 to the Blue Hens. Brennan earned the victory (1-1) with five saves, while Rekos took the loss (2-1) with four saves and all four goals allowed.
The Spiders saw 19 players go into the contest, with a short turnaround to Sunday. They will face Cal Poly at noon to finish the weekend. The Mustangs face host Virginia Friday night.
