UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's and women's tennis teams are all set to begin the 2015-16 season with a fall slate that will prove to be challenging. Both programs will play multiple events in the fall beginning with a set of separate tournaments this weekend.
The men's team, fresh off of a 17-7 spring season in 2015, which included an Atlantic 10 regular season championship, will head to East Carolina University for the ECU Fall Invite. The event will take place over three days, concluding on Sunday.
The Spiders put together a 10-match winning streak at the end of last season that helped land head coach Ben Johnson A-10 Coach of the Year honors. Junior Jacob Dunbar returns to the squad this season after being selected to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team due in large-part to his 20-2 singles record.
From ECU the men will head to the ITA All-Americans Oct. 3-6 then it's on to the Charlotte Fall Invite Oct. 9-11. The Spiders will also take part in the Atlantic Regionals Oct. 15-19 and the UNC-Wilmington Fall Invite Oct. 30-Nov. 1 to close out the fall slate.
Head coach Mark Wesselink will guide the women's program in his 25th season this year. The team finished 12-7 and went into the 2015 A-10 Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Spiders posted an unbeaten 8-0 record in March and cruised into the semifinals of the A-10 Tournament.
The Spiders will begin their 2015 fall season with a trip to Elon, N.C. for the Elon Invitational this weekend. From there the program will play at UMBC (Sept. 25-27) and in the Wake Forest Invitational (Oct. 9-11) before closing the fall slate with the Atlantic Region Singles Championships Oct. 15-18.
The complete spring schedule for the women is available on RichmondSpiders.com and will begin at home with Longwood on Jan. 24. It will be the first of 10 home matches for Richmond.
