UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - As a result of fan surveys conducted after each home football game last season, the University of Richmond athletics department is announcing a series of enhancements designed to improve the game day experience at Robins Stadium.
Fresh off the football team's 2014 FCS Playoff Second Round appearance, a current national top 25 ranking and 1-1 record thus far in the season, the Spiders look forward to an exciting home schedule in 2015! Please note just some of the game day enhancements:
- A new pre-game show has been developed to create an exciting atmosphere prior to kick-off that features an exciting new team entrance with pyrotechnics! Don't be surprised to see a skydiver or two!
- The athletics department has created a new program incentivizing local high school bands to perform at Spider football games and these bands will be incorporated into the new football pre-game show.
- There are several new menu items being introduced exclusively at Robins Stadium this season. Located at both permanent stands on the east and west side of the stadium, we introduce the first-ever extreme food item to Robins Stadium, the Walking Taco! The Walking Taco will feature fresh lettuce and tomato, shredded cheese, and a heaping mound of taco meat, all loaded into a crunchy bag of Fritos! The Walking Taco is very portable and easy to eat! Additionally, fans can now enjoy even more delicious food options at Robins Stadium including steak and cheese sandwiches, Italian sausage, corn dog nuggets, a chicken caesar wrap and kettle corn. Exclusive to the Sweet Frog Family Fun Zone, kids and parents alike can treat themselves to funnel cakes, fried Oreos, cotton candy and fresh squeezed lemonade.
- Officials' instant replay will be instituted at every home game and the University of Richmond will be only one of three Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) institutions that will be utilizing instant replay at every home game regardless of whether the game is televised.
- All Spider home and away football games will air live on the Spider IMG Sports Network. In Richmond, all broadcasts are on ESPN 950AM and HANK-FM 93.1. Audio broadcasts are available on mobile devices on the Spider Mobile App, ESPN950 app and TuneIn app.SpiderTV will provide live video streaming in HD of home games, available on computers and mobile devices. For the first time, SpiderTV will produce telecasts of two home games. The Sept. 19 game vs. VMI (6pm) and the Oct. 3 game vs. Maine (3:30pm) will air live on Comcast SportsNet Plus and WTVR 6.3 (Comcast Channel 206; Verizon Channel 466). The Spider IMG Sports Network welcomes Chris Anderson as the new analyst for football broadcasts. Anderson was a captain and all-conference defensive back for the Spiders from 1995-1999. He joins Voice of the Spiders Bob Black, sideline reporter Matt Smith and studio scoreboard host Matt Josephs on the broadcasts.
- There will be fewer on-field promotions and contests and our in-game giveaways will be thrown/shot to all parts of the stadium.
- Additional signage has been added around campus to help fans find general parking convenient to the stadium and so that fans can easily find our FREE shuttle service to the stadium. The service provides fans with a safe and efficient way to enter Robins Stadium. The FREE shuttle service starts approximately 2 hours before the game to give fans time to arrive for tailgating.
- Additional signage has also been added around Robins Center to help fans find the WILL CALL window (Ticket Window 2).
- The University continues to tweak the sound system throughout the stadium to try to provide a more consistent level and clear sound during the game.
The Richmond athletics department continues its commitment to focus on the student game day experience. New enhancements for students this year feature:
- A new tailgating location for students in parking lot B7. This space will provide some students the opportunity to park and tailgate behind their cars. Additionally, DJ's will perform, and food trucks will offer food and drink and much more,
- The ability for students to scan their student ID's to gain entrance to the football game (as opposed to claiming in advance),
- The ability to use their “dining dollars” at designated concession stands and snacks and water provided between the 3rd and 4th quarters, and
- Enhanced sound in the student section. Speakers have been added to the student section and the cheerleaders will be moved in front of the student section to allow for a louder and more intimidating student section.
