ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (9-12, 2-6 A-10) was hot early on in Sunday's tilt at St. Bonaventure (19-3, 8-1 A-10) but was unable to sustain it and ultimately fell short on the road 66-43. Janelle Hubbard led the way for the Spiders with 13 points, the 61st double-digit scoring performance of her career.
Richmond was held to just 28.3 percent shooting from the floor after a 5-5 start. The Spiders scored 15 points in the first quarter, 12 before the first media timeout but managed just 2 in the second quarter and eight in the third to effectively seal this one. Micaela Parson was the only other Spider to join Hubbard in double digits with 10. Bria Powell tossed in six and grabbed five rebounds.
The Spiders had the hot hand early in the first quarter, making all of their first five attempts from the floor. Janelle Hubbard scored seven quick points before the first media timeout and Micaela Parson contributed a three ball to help build an early lead. The score was knotted at 12 at the first media timeout.
Coming out of the timeout St. Bonaventure got out on the break and quickly went on a 10-1 run to build a nine-point lead. Richmond failed to convert a field goal after the timeout but made three free throws. Katie Healy converted with the clock winding down in the first quarter to give the Bonnies a 25-15 lead over the Spiders when the first quarter came to a close.
The second quarter began slowly for both sides. SBU scored first at the 8:01 mark when Imani Outlaw hit a jumper and the Spiders were held without a field goal until the 6:30 mark when Wike made a move on the post and scored inside. The Spiders had gone nearly 10 minutes without a field at that point but only trailed by 10.
The fast pace of the first quarter was completely gone by the midway point in the second. Richmond held the Bonnies to just 11 points but the SBU defense responded by holding the Spiders to two. Richmond forced St. Bona into three shot-clock violations but it was SBU who led by 19 at the halftime break.
Janelle Hubbard's nine first half points all came in the first quarter and Parson picked up three fouls, leaving her on the bench for much of the second quarter. The Spiders ended up shooting just 26.1 percent in the first half despite the red-hot first quarter and allowed the Bonnies to get loose and shoot 52.0 percent.
Kylie Murphree scored the first points of the third quarter with a three ball from the top of the lane but SBU answered right away and built a 23-point lead by the 6:30 mark. Coach Shafer called for time with 4:40 to play in the quarter and the Spiders trailing 45-20. SBU continued to built its lead down the stretch in the third quarter and sustained it throughout the fourth despite a late Richmond run to come away with its 19th victory of the season.
The Spiders return to the court on Wednesday with another long trip; this time to St. Louis for a date with the Billikins who rank third in the Atlantic 10 currently. The matchup will take place at 11 a.m. local time and Noon EST. It will be the second time this season that the Spiders have gotten up early for a game. Richmond defeated La Salle, 60-43, in a game that started at 11:30 a.m.
