UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer freshman class is proving to be a handful for Spider opponents this season.
For the second time this season, Brooke Beam was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her play in the Spider midfield. This marks the second-straight week that a UR newcomer has taken home the conference honor.
“Brooke is a very talented player who has shown steady improvement while adapting to speed and power of A-10 soccer,” head coach Peter Albright said.
Beam played a pivotal role in the midfield this week, as the Spiders went 1-1 in A-10 play. The reigning-Delaware High School Gatorade Player of the Year helped hold Saint Louis to just nine shots on Thursday night in a 1-0 loss. The Billikens were averaging over 17 shots entering the contest.
She then scored her first-career game-winner and second goal of the season in Sunday's 2-1 win over Rhode Island. Beam did not let the Rams' physical play deter her, as she received a ball from junior Lindsey Williams, beat her defender and sent a long left-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal.
“Brooke's offensive moments are often brilliant, and they are occurring more frequently,” Albright added of the freshman. “Her game-winning goal Sunday was another example. We are very excited about where she is in this stage of her development.”
Beam and the Spiders return to A-10 action on Thursday night, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on a tough Saint Joseph's team at 7 p.m.
