Spiders Fall To Rams In OT, 1-0
10/30/2016 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – In an aggressive and hard-fought rivalry game, the University of Richmond women's soccer team could not find the back of the net on Sunday afternoon, falling in overtime to VCU, 1-0.
“VCU played a great game,” said head coach Peter Albright. “We had good initial attacks, but things broke down as we got into the final third. We were not nearly as dangerous as we usually are, and VCU deserves much of the credit for that.”
VCU started off strong, testing the Spiders with a shot on goal in the opening three minutes, but goalie Carlie Blessing was there for the stop to keep the sheet clean.
Richmond's best chance of the half came when Lexi Prillaman broke free from her defender in the 39th minutes and took a hard shot from the right side, but the ball would sail wide, sending the two teams into half time knotted at 0-0.
The Spiders came out with momentum in the second half, tripling their shot output from the opening period.
Brooke Beam's shot in the 71st minute looked to be going in, but instead it hit the post to keep the game scoreless. Just over two minutes later, Ashley Gross send a long shot at the goal, but the VCU keeper came up with the save.
After a scoreless regulation period, the game was sent into overtime. VCU wasted little time, scoring in the second minute of extra time to take a 1-0 win.
The Spiders were outshot 13-8, but held a 4-3 advantage over the Rams in corner kicks. Blessing finished with fours saves in goal for the Spiders.
“We are bitterly disappointed to have our season end, but are thankful to have had such competitive opportunities,” Albright said. “Our close team will rebound, and have a bright future ahead of us.”
The Spiders wrap up their season with a 9-9-1 overall record.
