Spiders Fall To Billikens In Defensive Battle, 1-0
10/07/2016 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled for the full 90 minutes on Thursday night, but couldn't put the ball into the back of the net, falling to Saint Louis, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 action.
“I thought it was a terrific college soccer game,” head coach Peter Albright said. “I was really proud of the way the Spiders played tonight. After the first 20 minutes, we weathered the storm and took play over toward the end of the first half and created some good chances.”
Saint Louis controlled the opening minutes, but the Spiders fought back, leading to an even first half with neither team on the board entering halftime.
Richmond came out in the second half in full force, testing Billiken goalie Mary Neihaus with four straight shots.
“In the second half I thought we were the better team,” Albright said. “We pressed well, possessed the ball well and attacked well.”
Lexi Prillaman had the best chance of the game for the Spiders when she broke loose in the Saint Louis box, but her shot went straight to Neihaus, who finished the game with five saves.
Saint Louis took the lead for good late in the game, when Cristina Rodriquez sent a ball into the box to Danielle Tolmais, who sent it past Carlie Blessing for her eighth goal of the season and the SLU win.
“There were two really good chances in the game, one for each team,” Albright added. “They made theirs and we didn't.”
Blessing finished the game with one save for the Spiders, who equaled Saint Louis with nine shots on the day. Despite the loss, the Spider defense was strong on the day, as Saint Louis was averaging over 17 shots per game entering the contest.
The Spiders are back in action on Sunday, October 9, when they host Rhode Island at 1pm. Sunday's game is Senior Day, and fans are encouraged to arrive early to watch the four Richmond seniors be honored in a ceremony on the field.
