Valiant Effort Comes Up Short In Overtime Against Maryland
11/26/2016 | Men's Basketball
BROOKLYN – In a game that featured incredible defensive plays, clutch shot-making and steep swings of momentum, the Richmond Spiders came up just short in overtime against the No. 23 Maryland Terrapins in the Barclays Center Classic.
Four different Spiders scored in double figures as every player in the lineup came up big in different moments against the ranked Terrapins.
Richmond took a lead on a T.J. Cline three with 32 seconds left in regulation, and then Khwan Fore gave the Spiders a chance to break the tie after stealing a Terrapins in-bounds pass with less than 10 seconds left. However, a three-point attempt fell off and the Terrapins won in overtime, 88-82.
“I thought it was a really great game,” head coach Chris Mooney said. “I couldn't be more proud of our guys. I think we played a great first half. We weathered the storm in the second half, enough to take a lead and give ourselves a chance to win. I'm really pleased with how we played. Maryland is a really good team.”
Cline nearly had a triple-double in a game where he sat most of the first half in foul trouble. Cline finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Cline tied his career high in assists as he continues to lead the team in dimes.
ShawnDre' Jones was UR's scoring leader with 23 points and four assist on 8-of-17 shooting.
Marshall Wood had his best shooting game of the young season with a perfect 4-of-4 mark from three for 15 points. Khwan Fore also scored a season-high 13 points, including eight in the first eight minutes.
Maryland's Melo Trimble led all scorers with 31 points on 20 shots. The Spiders did force him into six turnovers. Anthony Cowan scored 18 and Justin Jackson added 16 for the Terrapins.
The Spiders opened up the game in the first half by extending a 13-10 lead to 28-14 with Cline mostly on the bench with foul trouble. The Spiders limited Maryland to one shot on offense and threes were falling for Richmond.
At the break, Richmond led by 12 and held a 22-17 advantage in rebounds after holding Maryland to just 29.0 percent shooting.
The Terrapins came out of the break firing behind the hot shooting of Trimble, tying the game at 47-47 with 11:50 left. Just three minutes later, Maryland seemed poised to pull away with a 57-52 lead, but Richmond responded with its own run.
Fore hit a mid-range jumper and then a steal from De'Monte Buckingham set up a jumper from Jones. Two more steals from Buckingham and Kwesi Abakah led to fast-break buckets from Cline and Jones and the Spiders were back on top by five with 3:21 left.
Maryland was able to come back and take a two-point lead with under a minute left, but Cline hit a dagger three-pointer from the top of the key to put Richmond ahead with 32 seconds remaining.
After Maryland's Justin Jackson made it to the foul line and hit the first shot, the Spiders had a chance for the ball after the officials ruled Maryland tapped it out of bounds. However, replay review overturned it and the Terrapins had a chance for the game-winner.
Fore had other ideas as he stole the ball off the in-bounds and Jones' last-second three fell off.
In overtime, Maryland jumped out to a seven-point lead before the Spiders cut it back to one possession on a wide-open Cline layup off the pass from Buckingham.
Trimble again responded with a three and Richmond was unable to get it to one possession over the final two minutes for the 88-82 final score.
Richmond will now play Boston College out of the ACC at 7 p.m. on ASN in the final day of the Barclays Center Classic.
