GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (5-7) exorcised some demons on Tuesday night at Furman (4-9) with a 54-48 victory. The Spiders halted their four-game losing streak and defeated a team that beat them in the Robins Center last season.
Major contributions come from all around the roster with Lauren Tolson leading the charge for a second-straight game. She cashed in 14 points to go with five rebounds and four steals. Micaela Parson and Jaide Hinds-Clarke joined LT in double-figures with 10 points apiece while Jaide pulled down seven boards in just 16 minutes of action.
Kylie Murphree had the best scoring night of her career, dropping in nine points on 4-7 shooting to go with two assists, two steals and a block. Freshman Amy Duggan also has the best night of her young career by leading the Spiders on the boards with eight in 19 minutes off the bench. Meanwhile four other Spiders all scored points to help the cause.
It was a slow go to start this one but it was Hinds-Clarke who got the scoring started with 7:18 to go in the first. After trading baskets Janelle Hubbard knocked in a jumper with less than a minute to go in the opening frame to push Richmond ahead by five.
The Richmond lead extended out to eight points midway through the second quarter when Murphree drove the lane and converted a layup, drawing a foul and knocked down the free throw. The effort capped off a seven-point first half for the junior guard. A Lauren Tolson triple kept the lead at eight with 2:01 left but Furman closed the half on a 4-0 run to make it a 28-24 ball game.
The game seesawed early in the third quarter until Furman managed to tie the game with 2:57 left. Hinds-Clarke answered with a layup of her own with 2:20 left in the frame and that would be it for the rest of the quarter.
Parson drew a foul and knocked down a free throw to get the scoring started in the fourth but Furman stormed back and took a one-point lead with 8:33 left in the game. With the score tied, 41-41, with six minutes left, Parson drilled her first and only triple of the night to spark an eventual 9-0 run for the Spiders that ultimately sealed the game. Richmond made its free throws down the stretch to close this one out.
The Spiders now head home for the holiday break and will return by welcoming Morgan State to the Robins Center on Dec. 27. It will be the final non-conference test before Atlantic 10 Conference play begins with a visit from Saint Joseph's on Dec. 31.
