UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – T.J. Cline tallied his third straight 20-point game, but it wasn't enough for Richmond who fell, 75-67, to Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon.
The Spiders (4-4) knocked down 11 threes and forced 15 Wake Forest (6-2) turnovers, but the Demon Deacon frontcourt was too much for the Spiders down the stretch.
Cline finished with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds as he continues to be one of the top points-rebounds-assists producer in the country.
ShawnDre' Jones scored 18 points, including four threes, to help the Spiders come back and tie the game in the second half. Nick Sherod had a career-high 13 points with three threes. He had a stretch where he scored eight points on three consecutive possessions.
Julius Johnson continued to be strong on the glass against taller forwards. He grabbed seven boards and now has 30 rebounds in the last five games.
The Demon Deacons were led by the double-double of John Collins who scored 16 points with 13 rebounds. Austin Arian (15), Dinos Mitoglou (11) and Keyshawn Woods (11) also reached double figures.
Wake Forest opened a nine-point lead in the first half, but the Spiders came battling back, electrifying the crowd of 6,705. The Spiders used a quick 7-0 run comprised of a Cline three, a Sherod jumper and a finger roll layup from Jones to tie the score at 24-24 with 3:28 left in the first half.
Grant Golden knocked down a three-pointer, three of his career-best six points, right before half to cut the margin to 32-30.
A layup from Cline tied the game five minutes into the second half, but two threes from Arians pushed Wake Forest back out in front by multiple possessions. Sherod's scoring flurry kept the Spiders within striking distance, but Richmond could not pull closer in the final minutes, falling 75-67.
The Spiders have a week for exams before hosting UMBC next Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the Robins Center.
