UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (7-7, 1-0 A-10) saved its best for conference play it seems, dropping Saint Joseph's (3-10, 0-1 A-10), 70-52, in the Robins Center on Saturday to put an end to a six-game losing streak against the Hawks.
Storylines were aplenty on the Robins Center floor. Four Spiders reached double figures, including Micaela Parson and Lauren Tolson, both of which dropped in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Janelle Hubbard broke out of her slump to score 16 points on 6-12 shooting and Jaide Hinds-Clarke continued her meteoric rise by scoring eight of her 12 in the second half.
As a team the Spiders shot 43.6 percent and held the Hawks to just 28.8 percent. Richmond shot over 40 percent in three of the four quarters including a 66.7 park in the second that helped to break the game wide open. It is the fourth time this season that the Spiders have best the 40 percent plateau, all of which have been wins on the scoreboard. It is also the second time in as many games, third time this season, which the defense has held the opponent south of 30 percent. All of those efforts resulted in wins as well.
On the silent side of things, Kylie Murphree cashed in her second three ball of the season, grabbed three rebounds, handed out three assists and came up with, you guessed it, three steals. Freshman Amy Duggan continued to expand her role after struggling to find court team early on. She scored four points and pulled down five boards to go with one assist in a career-best 21 minutes of action.
Parson scored the games' first points but both offenses struggled to find their way in the early going. The Hawks led by five, 7-2, with 5:41 left in the first but a Tolson layup just before the media timeout sparked what went on to be an 11-0 Richmond run. The Spiders never trailed again.
The sharks were circling in the second quarter. Richmond outscored Saint Joseph's, 26-14 to finish the half with a season high 41 points. Parson and Tolson combined for 26, first half points, shooting 8-11 from the floor, 2-3 from deep and 8-8 from the free throw line. Hubbard scored six in the first half to pace the effort off the bench.
In the third quarter, SJU made its stand, holding Richmond to just 23.5 percent shooting and outscored the home side 13-10 but it was all for naught. The Spiders came out firing in the fourth. Hubbard found her stroke and scored eight of her 10, second half, points in the final frame to put this one out of reach.
Richmond is 1-0 in the league for the second consecutive season and will return to the floor opposite crosstown rival VCU in the Siegel Center on Thursday, Jan. 5 on CBS Sports Network.
