LAST TIME OUT
The University of Richmond women's basketball team (9-12, 2-6 A-10) was hot early on in Sunday's tilt at St. Bonaventure (19-3, 8-1 A-10) but was unable to sustain it and ultimately fell short on the road 66-43. Janelle Hubbard led the way for the Spiders with 13 points, the 61st double-digit scoring performance of her career.
Richmond was held to just 28.3 percent shooting from the floor after a 5-5 start. The Spiders scored 15 points in the first quarter, 12 before the first media timeout but managed just 2 in the second quarter and eight in the third to effectively seal this one. Micaela Parson was the only other Spider to join Hubbard in double digits with 10. Bria Powell tossed in six and grabbed five rebounds.
ABOUT SLU
Saint Louis provided a tough test for league leader George Washington in an 89-80 loss to the Colonials Sunday afternoon. Jackie Kemph (15.4) and Sadie Stipanovich (12.7) are the lone Billikens averaging double figures while Stipanovich leads the team at 6.1 rebounds per game. Kemph has handed out 150 assists, which equates to 6.8 per game. That number ranks second in the A-10 behind only April Robinson of Duquesne who hands out 7.2 assists per game. The same five players have started every game for the Billikens, all of which average at least 22 minutes per game with two players averaging 15 or more off the bench.
FREE THROWS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Richmond is 8-4 this season when it makes more free throws than its opponent, 0-8 when it does not and 1-0 when it makes the same amount. The Spiders have struggled from the line this season but have shown if they can get to the line and convert more than their opponent, the success rate jumps up.
TOUGH STRETCH
The Spiders have reached the part of their schedule that will be the toughest test of the season. Beginning with the tilt opposite Duquesne, Richmond will play four consecutive games against the four teams currently ranked 1-4 in the Atlantic 10 standings. The Spiders travelled to St. Bonaventure (2nd) last Sunday, Saint Louis (3rd) on Wednesday and welcome George Washington (1st) the following Sunday. Those four teams have a combined record of 73-13 this season.
RVA WELCOMES A-10 TOURNAMENT
Last season was the second of a three-year partnership with the Atlantic 10 Conference and the City of Richmond to host the A-10 Women' s Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The tournament had been played the previous two years at Hagan Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph's. Last year, Richmond defeated UMass in the first round before falling to Fordham.
