LAST TIME OUT
The University of Richmond women's basketball (12-15, 5-9 A-10) team erased a seven-point lead in the first quarter and rode a brilliant shooting performance from Janelle Hubbard to a 57-50 road victory over George Mason (11-16, 6-8 A-10) on Wednesday afternoon. Janelle Hubbard shook loose for 29 points on 10-19 shooting, including a 7-11 clip from long range.
Micaela Parson pitched in 13 points, four rebounds and three assists while teammate Bria Powell scored six points and pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds, far surpassing her previous best of seven. Kylie Murphree returned home to Fairfax for the first time in her career and did not disappoint, handing out a career-best 8 assists and holding Mason leading scorer, Taylor Brown, to just 14 points.
LAST TIME VS. GEORGE WASHINGTON
Richmond gave George Washington a run for much of the last meeting, earlier this month, at the Robins Center but the Colonials proved to be too much down the stretch and Richmond went down, 62-47. The Spiders put two players in double figures; Micaela Parson who put up 11 points and Janelle Hubbard (10). Bria Powell built on her big game at Saint Louis with eight points and Kylie Murphree matched her career high with eight after putting up six in the first quarter alone. Karleigh Wike pitched in six points and Alicia Hudalla grabbed a career-high seven rebounds off the bench. Both Murphree and Parson handed out three assists.
DISCOVERING THE LONG BALL
Richmond hit a season-high nine three balls on Saturday afternoon opposite George Mason and obviously did so without Lauren Tolson who has been out since early December. Since going 1-4 against GW the Spiders have hit 29 triples over the last four games combined, the most during any four game stretch this season that did not involve Tolson, who hit 20 triples in eight games before getting hurt. Micaela Parson (29-73, .397) ranks second in the A-10 in 3FG percentage and is one of five Spiders now who has it at least 10 long balls this season.
JANELLE SHAKES LOOSE
Janelle Hubbard has been outstanding in conference play, averaging 16.5 points per game and 15.7 for the season, which ranks fourth in the A-10. The Preseason All-Conference guard has gone north of 20 points four times in league play, including twice in the last three games. Her most recent outing at George Mason was stellar. She scored 29 points on 10-19 shooting, including 7-11 from long range to lead all scorers. She also moved into 11th on the all-time scoring list during the game, passing Michele Koclanes (1,205) and current assistant coach Ebony Tanner Moore (1,215).
ALICIA WHO-DALLA
The surprise off the bench of late has been Alicia Hudalla, who grabbed seven rebounds in the most recent meeting with VCU, all of which came in the second half, matching a career-high. She then found her scoring touch against Fordham, tossing in a career-best 10 points to guide the Spiders to a win. The sophomore was averaging just 4.2 minutes per game, with six DNP's before the calendar turned to 2016 but has since found herself getting 12.3 minutes of run per night, including a career-best 23 vs. Fordham, and has matched her career-high with seven rebounds twice in the last five games.
CHANGING THE MOJO
The Spiders began the season 5-0 before suffering their first loss and were 6-2 when they lost second-leading scorer Lauren Tolson for the season and freshman forward Tuuli Menna for what turned into 13 games due to injury. Richmond went 3-13 in the 16 games following that 6-2 start and even succumbed to its first six-game losing streak since 1985 but in the two games since have played like a completely different team. The Spiders have scored back-to-back-to-back victories over VCU, Fordham and George Mason, teams currently ranked 5, 6 and 8 in the A-10 and have a chance down the stretch to climb out of the first day of the A-10 tournament in March.
BRIA BREAKING GROUND
This senior has been without her running mate, Lauren Tolson, for most of the season and struggled to find her stroke for much it but opposite Saint Louis Powell shook loose and has not looked back, posting a pair of season-high point totals. At Saint Louis she scored 12 points on 4-11 shooting and even attempted her first triple of the season. After tossing in eight points vs. George Washington, Bria went off for 13 points on 5-6 shooting against Davidson. Over the weekend the senior grabbed a career-best 12 boards to lead the Spiders at George Mason. Since rejoining the starting lineup, Powell is shooting 41 percent from the floor, averaging 10 points and four rebounds.
