04/10/2016 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a pair of two-run homers and strong pitching performances, the University of Richmond baseball team defeated Saint Louis, 5-3 Sunday afternoon.
Saint Louis (16-16, 7-2) grabbed a quick 2-0 start in the first behind a two-run shot from Josh Bunselmeyer, but their lead wouldn't hold very long.
The Spiders responded in the home half of the inning as Doug Kraeger and Jansen Fraser launched a pair of two-run homers putting the Spiders ahead 4-2.
In the seventh, the Billikens loaded the bases looking to break open the game, but between Caleb Ward's performance on the hill, SLU was only able to push one across on a sacrifice fly, cutting Richmond's lead to one, 4-3.
Daniel Brumbaugh delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to plate Fraser, who doubled in the inning, to put the Spiders ahead 5-3.
The Billikens looked for a rally in the ninth, but the Spiders continued to shut down the league-leader. Lee made an incredible diving grab in center for the second out before Michael Morman made the final out and secure Richmond's second-straight win.
Richmond (17-14, 4-5) will host Super Regional participant and Big 10 foe, Maryland, on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will be available on SpiderTV.
