ATLANTA, GA. - Following a MVP weekend at the 2016 Eurobasket Summer League, University of Richmond alum, Kristina King has been invited to attend a private workout with the WNBA's Atlanta Dream.
King, a 5-10 guard from Alpharetta, Ga., earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors as a senior, making 26 starts in 29 games. She finished the season with a team-high 59 steals, 12.5 points per game and became, at the time, the 20th member of the 1,000-point club.
She then moved on to play in Europe (Iceland, Romania) and later earned Eurobasket.com All-Import honors along with a league championship. Last summer she was selected to play for Team USA in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan. She was named to the All-Tournament 2nd Team.
King was on top of three major categories over the weekend, finishing ESL averaging 14 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds (All ranked in the top 5). She recently returned from the 2016 Copa Mitchell Cup in Santiago, Dominican Republic where she was named MVP.
“I want to thank the Atlanta Dream for inviting me to workout, and I am excited to have the opportunity to go and prove myself,” King said. “I appreciate how the coaches have prepared me for this, and I plan to work as hard as I can to hopefully earn the opportunity to play for a great coach like Coach (Michael) Cooper.”
This season Kristina King was drafted by the GIE Lady Matrix of the (WUBA), the top minor league program in the country. King was advised to stay and improve her stock as a professional basketball player.
"It was a very difficult choice for me not to return to Europe,” said King. “People called me crazy but we had a great plan and it has worked to perfection.”
Kristina King is currently the top scorer in the WUBA averaging 22.1ppg. She is on the WNBA radar and has over seven offers to return to Europe for the fall of 2016.
The 2016 WNBA Draft will take place tonight (April 14) at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN2 and ESPNU from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. The draft comes one month before tip-off of the WNBA's historic 20th season, which opens on Saturday, May 14.
