BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Richmond baseball team split a twin bill with Fordham on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders dropped a 7-3 decision in the first game before bouncing back to take game two, 7-6.
Game 1
Fordham jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Spiders looked to answer in the top of the second with runners in scoring position, but the runners were left on.
In the third, Kurtis Brown loaded the bases with his single to right and Daniel Brumbaugh followed with a 2-run single, giving the Spiders a 2-1 lead. Michael Morman looked to extend Richmond's lead in the fourth as he smacked a ball, but the right fielder made a grab at the wall, keeping it a one-run game. The Rams' Joseph Runco tripled to the right field corner pushing the run across and evening the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth.
An RBI single from Brown put the Spiders back on top, 3-2 as Kyle Adams scored in the fifth. Richmond looked to add some insurance runs in the seventh as Doug Kraeger and Brown led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but Fordham's Greg Weissesrt pitched out of the jam.
Capped by a bases clearing double in the bottom of the seventh, the Rams pushed four across to take a 6-3 lead. Fordham tacked on a run in the eighth off a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 7-3.
The Spiders looked to spark a rally in the ninth, but the Fordham reliever Joseph Serrapica struck out the side, securing the Ram's lead.
Game 2
Richmond struck first with a pair of runs in the first as Tyler Beckwith and Kraeger scored on a Brown double and a Fordham error.
The Rams answered in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout, cutting the Spiders' lead to one, 2-1. Brown delivered an RBI single to right allowing Morman to cross the dish and extend Richmond's lead 3-1, in the third.
In the fourth, the Rams plated three runs to come from behind and take a 4-3 lead, sparked by an RBI double from Luke Stampfl to cut Richmond's lead to one, before the Rams plated two more to take a one-run lead.
The Spiders evened the score at 4-4 when Brumbaugh crossed the plate in the sixth. The sophomore led off the inning with a single to left center and advanced on the sacrifice bunt from Brandon Johnson before scoring on an RBI single from Beckwith.
The Rams broke the tie with a two-run single from Mark Donadio, as Fordham took a 6-4 lead in the sixth.
D.J. Lee had a huge at-bat in the eighth as he tripled to the gap in left center, driving in a pair of runs, tying the ball game at six. Lee ended up crossing the dish to give the Spiders a one-run lead, 7-6.
Brumbaugh retired the final two Fordham batters to protect Richmond's 7-6 victory, while he picked up his third save of the season. In his debut on the mound, Dalton Light earned his first win. The freshman tossed an inning of relief, striking out a pair.
