RICHMOND, Va. – Rivalries bring out the best in teams, and that's what happened on Saturday evening as the University of Richmond baseball team battled past VCU, 5-4, in extra innings in the series opener at The Diamond.
The Spiders (21-15, 7-6) have now won three-straight games. With the win, Richmond snapped VCU's seven-game win streak.
Richmond looked to get things started early as Kyle Adams drew a two-out walk and Doug Kraeger reached on an error, which put runners on the corners, but a flyout ended the inning. The Spiders looked again to get on the board in fourth behind a pair of walks. Daniel Brumbaugh laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, but a strikeout ended the inning, keeping zeros on the scoreboard.
VCU (26-13, 9-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead off an RBI single allowing Matt Davis to score, who led off the inning with a double. However, their lead wouldn't last long.
In the fifth, Tyler Beckwith doubled down the left field line before Adams and Kraeger drew two-out walks to load the bases. Kurtis Brown stepped in and smashed the ball down the right field line for a bases clearing double, putting the Spiders ahead, 3-1.
The Rams responded quickly, getting one back in the bottom half, cutting Richmond's lead to one, 3-2.
Richmond extended its lead, 4-2, in the sixth, as Beckwith delivered a two-out single to drive in Brumbaugh. VCU answered, scoring in the bottom half of the inning, making it a one-run ball game.
VCU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Darian Carpenter, which ultimately would send the game into extras.
Brown drew a leadoff walk in the tenth before Brumbaugh laced a single to left, driving in the winning run as Jake Wood (came in as a pinch runner) slid across the plate to give Richmond a one-run advantage, 5-4. Matt Olson shut down the VCU offense in the bottom half, sending the Rams down in order, to secure the win for the Spiders.
Keenan Bartlett earned his fifth start of the season and went six-plus innings for Richmond before Olson came in for his 13th appearance on the hill. During Olson's three-plus innings, he allowed just one hit and struck out three en route to his fourth win of the season.
