09/12/2016 | Women's Golf
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Elsa Diaz held on strong at the top of the leaderboard in monday's final round of the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Plantation in Williamsburg, Va.
Entering the final round in second place, Diaz shot 77 (+5) today to finish at 73-74-77=224 (+8) for the tournament, tying for third place overall. Diaz's total score marked her second-best tournament stroke total in her career, and her third-place individual finish ties for the highest individual finish by a Spider in four years.
The Spiders were caught in the team standings by their final round pairing mates in Seton Hall and Georgetown and UR finished fourth overall, just one stroke off third place and seven off second. Richmond played in the same tournament last spring and went from ninth to fourth place, improving on that previous final score by 31 strokes.
"We definitely showed that we are capable of playing championship-level golf," head coach Ali Wright said. "We put ourselves in a position to win today and we just had a few too many high rounds all on the same day. This team has a lot of depth and we are going to continue improving upon our performance from this weekend."
Sophomore Isabella Rusher finished in a tie for 11th place with a final scorecard of 74-70-83=227 (+11). Her second score of 70 was the best round in the entire tournament. It also marked the third under-par round of her career.
Sophie DiPetrillo and Annie Collom finished within one stroke of each as DiPetrillo shot 78-74-81=233 (+17) and Collom shot 79-77-78=234 (+18).
Marie Donnici turned in the second-best round of the day for Richmond, improving to a final score of 83-79-78=240 (+24). Maria Pons Cano finished with a score of 81-74-85=240 (+24).
Richmond next travels north to Pennsylvania for the Nittany Lion Invitational on Sept. 24-25 at Penn State.
