Spiders Fall To Dukes In A-10 Opener, 1-0
09/30/2016 | Women's Soccer
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled through the rain on Thursday evening, but was unable to come away with a win, falling to Duquesne, 1-0, in both teams' Atlantic 10 opener.
“This was a very physical game against a determined opponent in the driving rain,” head coach Peter Albright said. “It was difficult for us to move the ball and attack efficiently tonight.”
Duquesne got on the board in the sixth minute when Abby Losco headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick. The remainder of the half saw both teams trade possession, but neither team could find the goal, giving the Dukes a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Spiders put on the pressure to begin the second half as the rain poured down on Rooney Field, and maintained a forceful attack through the remainder of the game. Despite the offensive pressure, the Spiders were unable to even the score in the final 45 minutes.
“The Spiders put forth a good effort, but the game just didn't fall our way,” Albright added. “Lexi Prillaman had another strong performance tonight, forcing the Duquesne goalie to make a couple of great saves.”
Both teams finished the game with 12 shots, while Richmond held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Katie Brennan started in goal for the Spiders and logged two saves, while Carlie Blessing finished with four saves through 67 minutes of play.
The Spiders return to action this Sunday, October 2, when they host Atlantic 10 foe UMass. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
