Spiders Post Weekend Sweep With 3-1 Win Over Sacred Heart
09/04/2016 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – It was a successful weekend for the University of Richmond women's soccer team, as the Spiders rounded out the VCU Invitational with three goals by three different players in a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart.
“Once we got down to business, I thought we got control of the game and scored a couple of really good goals,” head coach Peter Albright said. “We have a lot of dangerous players and a balanced attack, so we tried to share the ball a lot.”
Richmond dominated possession to start the game, but didn't get on the board until the 38th minute of play when senior Meaghan Carrigan converted a penalty kick after being taken down at the top of the box.
Just over a minute and a half later, the Spiders doubled their lead when sophomore Bailey Cristian scored her first goal of the season. Junior Emily Drummond and sophomore Keaira Clark were each credited an assist, as Drummond sent a short ball to Clark, who snuck the ball through the defenders for Cristian to finish.
Richmond took a 2-0 lead into the break, but the Pioneers came out strong in the second half, scoring on a one-timer off of a corner kick in the 47th minute.
After back-and-forth play through the half, freshman Brooke Beam received a pass from junior Olivia Aha in the 77th minute, beat multiple Sacred Heart defenders and sent a long shot past goalie Nicole Sambuco for her first career goal and a 3-1 win.
The Spiders outshot Sacred Heart, 19-6, and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Katie Brennan finished with three saves in the win, and played a pivotal role when the Pioneers threatened to score in the closing minutes.
“It's great to get the second win of the weekend, and I think we're in a really great place right now,” Carrigan said about the game. “It's really nice, as a forward, knowing that when I lay the ball to someone, anyone can score.”
With the win, the Spiders won the VCU Invitational, finishing with six points at 2-0-0. Carrigan was named Tournament MVP, while Alyssa Walker, Lindsay Belli and Aha were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Richmond returns to action on Thursday, September 8, when they travel to Charlottesville to face third-ranked Virginia. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
