DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (10-12, 4-5 A-10) leaned on the backs of Micaela Parson and Janelle Hubbard on Saturday afternoon as the pair combined for 43 points to lead the Spiders past Davidson (3-18, 1-8 A-10) on the road, 61-52.
Parson was the catalyst, scoring a season-high 23 points to go with a season-high tying 12 rebounds, capturing the first double-double of her career. She also handed out three assists and swiped a pair of steals while going 11 of 14 from the free throw line in arguably her best game of the season. Hubbard added 20 points of her own, five rebounds and three steals as the only other Spider to reach double figures.
The defense set the tone early in this one, holding the home side to just four points in the first quarter. The Spiders led by as many as 17 in the second quarter and had a 16-point lead in the second half before Davidson came storming back to cut this one to just a two-point game with 4:38 to play. Richmond was able to gather itself following a timeout however and closed the game on a 13-6 run to claim victory.
Hubbard got off to a hot start in the fourth quarter, knocking down each of her first two shots, both from long range to give the Spiders an early 8-2 lead. That lead extended out to 12-2 before Davidson scored again and the Spiders closed the quarter leading, 16-4.
Neither team scored until the 8:23 mark on the second quarter when Davidson canned a pair of free throws but the Spider offense got off and running once again from that point forward. Parson scored or assisted on seven-straight Richmond points as the lead grew to 17 following a pair of Wiseman free throws at the 2:32 mark. Richmond ended up taking a 31-16 lead into the break.
The third quarter was sloppy for both sides, at best, but the Spiders still managed to extend the lead, outscoring the home side, 13-12, taking a 16-point lead into the second quarter after Hubbard buried a three ball at the buzzer. Davidson made its move in the fourth quarter but it would not be enough in the end. The lead was cut all the way down to two but the Spiders made free throws and timely stops to secure the win.
Next up for Richmond is the second meeting with crosstown rival VCU on Tuesday (Jan. 31) at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center, where the Spiders will look to even the season series. The Rams currently sit ahead of Richmond in the A-10 standings at 5-4 but the Spiders can match that mark with a win on Tuesday.
