Comeback Effort Falls Just Short Against Stony Brook
10/28/2017 | Football
Quarterback Kyle Lauletta did his best to keep his team alive all night long, throwing for 310 yards on 33 of 52 passing to go with three more touchdowns. He now has 26 passing touchdowns this season, which match the single-season record set by Michael Strauss in 2013. He has at least three games left to try and break that record.
Two of those three passing scores found the hands of Dejon Brissett who collected 66 yards through the air on seven catches. Only Tyler Wilkins picked up more yards as his season renaissance continues. He corralled nine balls for 112 yards, a season and career-high yardage total. The only two 100-yard efforts of his career have come against Stony Brook.
Cortrelle Simpson added 55 yards on six grabs while Garrett Hudson and Xavier Goodall each added three catches. Five other Spiders caught balls. Goodall was the team's leading rusher but picked up most of it on the longest single run of the Spiders' season – a 34-yard scamper in the third quarter.
On the defensive side of the ball it was the breakout star of the season Daniel Jones that led the team in tackles with 12. Justin Rubin was the only other Spider to eclipse double-digits. Seven Spiders added tackles for loss and Andrew Clyde collected the team's only sack.
Stony Brook got on the board first with a touchdown on its first possession and had the Spiders playing catch-up the rest of the way. Trailing by 10 with just over five minutes to play, Lauletta led the Spiders on a 12-play, 90-yard drive capped off by a great touchdown toss to Simpson. However, the time left on the clock, coupled with the lack of timeouts on the Spider sideline resulted in defeat for the home side.
Richmond will now hit the road, hoping to right the ship against back-to-back Top 10 opponents. Villanova is up first next Saturday followed by a date with top-ranked and defending national champion James Madison. The regular season will conclude on Nov. 18 at home against Capital Cup rival William & Mary.
