Four Spiders Score In Double-Figures In Loss to Jacksonville State
11/13/2017 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Enthusiasm and excitement packed the Robins Center on Monday afternoon as the University of Richmond men's basketball team hosted its annual "Dream Big Day" for local schools.
Unfortunately, the added enthusiasm wasn't enough as the Spiders dropped a tough 94-61 decision to reigning OVC Champion Jacksonville State.
Four Spiders finished in double-figures on the afternoon with sophomore De'Monte Buckingham and freshmen Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard each chipping in 13. Sophomore Nick Sherod was the fourth player in double figures with 10. Golden added six rebounds and four assists, while Buckingham had five rebounds and three assists in the contest.
Gilyard became the first freshman since Kendall Anthony in 2011-12 to have back-to-back double-digit scoring performances in his first two games as a Spider.
"I was pleased with the way we started the game, especially after Friday's game," Head Coach Chris Mooney said. "They are a very, very good team and we weren't able to match their physicality and intensity for 40 minutes. Being young, we have to really focus on getting better each and every day."
The two teams traded baskets to start the game and Richmond took a lead after Golden knocked down a pair of free throws with 17:15 to play in the first half.
JSU would extend their lead to six, but three-pointers from Buckingham and Gilyard bookended a 8-2 run by the Spiders to tie the game at 15-15.
The Gamecocks' Christian Cunningham sparked a JSU run that would give the visitors a lead they never relinquished.
Richmond returns to action in the first-ever Cayman Islands Classic on Monday, November 20 against UAB. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
