Freshman Alex Parson Nets 27 in Loss to Wright State, 85-69

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (4-3) was led on Thursday afternoon by an otherworldly effort from its emerging freshman star, Alex Parson, who posted a career-best and Richmond team season high 27 points but it wasn't enough to hold off the Raiders of Wright State (4-2) who upended the Spiders, 85-69.
Micaela Parson joined her sister in double-figures for the sixth time already this season. The senior guard added 17 points as the only other Spider to reach double figures. Jaide Hinds-Clarke nearly had her first double-double of the season by scoring nine points and pulling down eight rebounds. Six other Spiders contributed points as the team posted a season-high 48 points off the bench.
Entering the game on Thursday both teams had been averaging more than 80 points per game and it showed early on as the game turned into a track meet pretty quickly. Wright State was converting and the Spiders were struggling to find a rhythm however and by the end of the first quarter the Raider had built an eight-point lead.
Richmond responded with a few stops to begin the second quarter and scored the first five points of the frame to make it a three-point game, 22-19, at the 7:25 mark. Wright State responded with an extended 23-12 run to close the quarter leading 45-31.
The Spiders' young gun did their best to keep the team alive though as Jaide Hinds-Clarke and Alex Parson each tossed in nine, first half, points. Micaela added seven in limited time due to foul troubles, Dee Hatcher had four and Alicia Hudalla contributed a pair.
The depth of Richmond showed in that first half as 24 of the team's 31 points came off the bench. Ten players saw at least five minutes of action while Wright State was just the opposite, using four of its five starters for 17 or more minutes and all five for 12 or more.
The Spiders had plenty of fight left and it showed in the third quarter. Trailing by 22 at the 3:08 mark, the Parson sisters led the Spiders on 12-4 run to close the quarter and deficit was just 14 by the end of the frame.
Alex did everything she could to keep her team in this game in the fourth quarter. She scored 10 points in that final frame to go north of 20 for the first time in her career and give the Spiders their highest scoring individual tally of the season. Richmond cut the lead to 13 at the 6:46 mark but that was as close as it would come, as Wright State was able to answer the Richmond offense the rest of the way to come away with the victory.
The Spiders won't rest long as they'll be visiting in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon. Tip from Norfolk is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be available for viewing on ESPN3.
