Gilyard’s Heroics Leads Spiders Past JMU, 74-71
12/10/2017 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – 10 games into his collegiate career, freshman Jacob Gilyard of the University of Richmond men's basketball program is making quite a name for himself.
His heroics on Sunday afternoon at a raucous Robins Center only added to it as the Kansas City, Mo. native drilled a three-pointer with :00.4 left to give the Spiders a thrilling 74-71 victory over in-state rival JMU.
Gilyard's day included a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including a career-high five three-pointers. He also had three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
"We practice late game situations almost every day and I was just trying to get a good shot off," Gilyard said. "I saw an opportunity and felt good and let it go."
Junior Khwan Fore chipped in 14 points and played stifling defense down the stretch, while redshirt freshman Grant Golden added 12 points, five assists and four rebounds on the day. Junior Julius Johnson was the fourth Spider in double-figures, pouring in a critical 11 points and grabbing five rebounds off the bench.
"Our energy was great today and we need to bring that every day," Gilyard said. "Everyone in that locker room wants to play well and work hard for each other, and I thought that showed in today's game."
It was a 40 minutes not for the faint of heart, featuring 12 ties and 11 lead changes.
Nick Sherod gave the Spiders an early 14-8 advantage with a three-pointer with 10:26 to play in the first half, but JMU wouldn't go away quietly, chipping away at the lead.
A three-pointer from Johnson in the final minutes of the first half sent the teams into the break tied at 28.
The largest lead from either side in the second half was only six, but the game was tied at 59 with 6:58 to play when Sherod struck again from long range.
Back-and-forth the teams went, before Fore's free-throw with 21 seconds remaining gave the Spiders a 71-69 lead. JMU's leading scorer Stuckey Mosley drove the lane, drew a foul and knocked down two free-throws to tie the game at 71.
Gilyard then went to work, pulling up from long range and knocking down the game-winner with :00.4 on the clock, and then stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory.
The Spiders will now have the week off for exams, before hosting the Bison of Bucknell on Tuesday, December 19. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
