UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's and women's basketball teams rank among the nation's elite in graduation success rate, according to the most recent NCAA report.
The Spiders are among just four schools in the Atlantic 10 to have both the men's and women's basketball programs with 100-percent graduation success rate, joined by Dayton, Davidson and La Salle.
"This is a testament to our student-athletes, coaches and our outstanding faculty," Deputy Athletic Director David Walsh said. "This university challenges our student-athletes both athletically and academically, and these numbers are a clear testament to their hard work and dedication."
Out of 351 Division I programs, the Spiders are just one of 34 (top-10 percent) teams to post a 100-percent GSR on both the men's and women's side.
This marks the first time since 2007-08 that either the men's or women's side earned a 100-percent GSR. For the men's program, it's the first time ever (since reports started in 2004-05) that the Spiders have earned a 100-percent GSR.
Overall, the athletic department sports a 90-percent graduation rate, 22-points higher than the national average of 68-percent for student-athletes.
Nine of the Spiders programs earned a perfect GSR, with men's golf, field hockey, women's golf, women's lacrosse, swimming & diving, women's tennis and women's track and field/cross country joining both basketball programs.
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success.
