KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (6-8) began Atlantic 10 play the right way by closing out 2017 with a 74-53 win at Rhode Island (2-12). The Spiders were carried by the trip of Micalea Parson, Kailyn Fee and Dee Hatcher who combined for 47 points in their first A-10 action of the season.
Micaela Parson continued her Player of the Year caliber campaign with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals in 29 minutes of action. She has now scored in double figures in 16-straight games and has gone for at least 20 five times already this season, a new career-high, topping her sophomore campaign when she did it four times.
Fee came off the bench and was electric from beyond the arc once again. She knocked in five of 12 tries from deep in her A-10 debut after missing the last two games with an injury. Joining her in double figures was Dee Hatcher who made her third-straight start and tossed in 11 points.
In a pseudo return to her home region, Amy Duggan scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds. Alicia Hudalla also grabbed seven boards while freshman Alex Parson grabbed six to go with her seven points.
The 76 field goal attempts and 17 steals are both the second most for the Spiders this season and the 51 rebounds are easily a season high.
Scoring was hard to come by for both sides in the first half. The Spider defense clamped down on the Rams and held them to just 17 points over the first two quarters while allowing just 25 shots to be taken. On the flip side the Spiders racked up 30 points 11-42 from the floor, nine of which came off the hot hand of Kailyn Fee who buried 3-7 tries from long range. Her classmate Alex Parson was the second leading scorer for the visiting Spiders with seven points at the break to go with a team-leading six rebounds.
The Spiders outscored the home side, 16-11, in the opening frame then 14-6 in the second to build its lead. Despite the poor shooting the Spiders held their second largest halftime lead of the season (16 vs. Savannah State).
The shooting in the second half for both sides was much better. The third and fourth quarters were identical with Richmond outscoring the Rams, 22-18, in each. Rhode Island shot 50 and 57.1 percent in the third and fourth quarters respectively but Richmond was forcing turnovers and took five more shots total.
While Rhode Island finished with a better field goal percentage, the Spiders dominated the game in almost every other aspect and moved to 3-8 when it has a lower field goal percentage than the opponent.
Next up for the Spiders will be Saint Louis who also began A-10 play with a win on Sunday afternoon by knocking off St. Bonaventure. Tip off from the Robins Center on Wednesday (Jan. 3) is set for 7 p.m.
