12/06/2017 | Women's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (5-6) was led on Wednesday night by Micaela Parson who posted the first Spider double-double of the season (19 points, 11 rebounds) but unbeaten Navy (9-0) was able to pull away late to upend the home side, 76-56.
For the eighth time this season, the Parson sisters both reached double figures as Alex was able to notch 10 in the first start of her young career. Micaela, the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 was 6-12 from the floor, 2-3 from deep and 5-6 from the free throw line to go with three steals and an assist in just 29 minutes.
Karleigh Wike tossed in eight points on 4-7 from the floor and hauled in six boards and Kailyn Fee contributed six points on 2-6 from long range. Also making the first start of her career was Dee Hatcher and despite struggling with early foul trouble, managed four points over 11 minutes. Ragan Wiseman made her season debut after sitting the first 10 games with an injury, played nine minutes, grabbed two rebounds, blocked two shots and had a steal.
Both sides struggled to get going early on in this one. Navy held the Spiders to 1-16 shooting to start the game before a 6-16 burst in the second quarter. Despite that the Midshipmen led, 31-18, at the break.
The Spiders came out hot in the second half. Hatcher spun in the lane and scored to get the third quarter started after Richmond forced a turnover and later on the Parson sisters knocked in back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to just nine with 5:08 to go in the third, forcing Navy into a timeout.
From there Navy commenced on an 8-2 run that seemingly put this one out of reach. The Spiders battled, shot for shot with Navy in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the deficit and ultimately went down swinging.
After playing its first 11 games of the season over just 27 days, Richmond will now have two full weeks off to prepare for the Stetson Hatter Classic in Deland, Fla. (Dec. 20-21). While there the Spiders will take on host Stetson (Dec. 20) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 21), concluding non-conference play in the process. When they return from the holiday break the Spiders will travel to Rhode Island to begin A-10 play on Dec. 31 before returning home to start 2018 off with Saint Louis in the Robins Center on Jan. 3.
