02/11/2017 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Entering Friday afternoon, the University of Richmond men's tennis team had won four straight matches and East Carolina's squad was 6-0 this spring. Something had to give.
After quite a battle, the Spiders were able to push the Pirates off the plank en route to a thrilling 4-3 victory to tie the program's record for the best start at 6-2 this spring.
“These guys continue to battle and show their toughness,” Assistant Coach Jamie Morgan said. “Our doubles were strong once again to get us going. Jacob was once again dominant at the top and John and James continue to do a great job for us to get us a big win against a really tough opponent.”
In doubles action, Jacob Dunbar teamed with classmate Alexandre Felisa to grab a 6-2 win at the first position, followed by James Aronson and John Karlawish locking up the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the third spot.
Dunbar kept things going on the singles court with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win over ECU's Freddie McGreehan to give Richmond a 2-0 advantage.
The Pirates stormed back with three straight wins to grab a 3-2 lead, but Karlawish evened things up with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #5.
Aronson clinched the match with a straight set victory at the sixth position, 6-2, 6-3 over ECU's Will Bissett.
Richmond returns to the courts on Saturday morning when they take on Appalachian State at 11 a.m. in Greenville.
