FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (12-14, 6-7 A-10) used a huge fourth-quarter run to pick up a crucial win over George Mason (12-14, 5-8 A-10) on the road, paced by 19 from Janelle Hubbard and 13, second-half points from Jaide Hinds-Clarke.
With those 19 points, Hubbard has now moved into fifth on the Richmond all-time scoring list, passing Laurie Governor (1,655), with 1,665 points in her career. She is 111 points behind Pam Bryant for fourth all-time, with at least four games left on the schedule.
Jaide Hinds-Clarke has arguably her best showing as a Spider on Sunday afternoon. After struggling with foul trouble in the first half and being held scoreless and rebound-less, the freshman exploded for 13 points in the second half to go with six boards to spark the Spiders down the stretch. She benefitted greatly from Kylie Murphree's presence. The Fairfax native, playing in front of her hometown crowd played one of the most complete games of her career, scoring eight points, grabbing seven boards and handing out six assists.
Micaela Parson joined Hubbard and Hinds-Clarke in double-figures with 13. She also handed out five assists to contribute to the team total of 17. Rounding out the starting lineup was Alicia Hudalla who gave the Spiders a lift with seven points and eight rebounds, both season highs in her 14th start. Ragan Wiseman pitched in five points and three rebounds and Taisha Murphy added five points off the bench.
As a team the Spiders shot a season-best 46.6 percent from the floor and held the home team to just 37.3 percent while locking up leading scorer Kara Wright to just seven points in the game.
George Mason was first on the board but it was Hudalla who answered with a triple in the early going to set the tone for the Spiders. Mason had more runs in them in the first quarter, taking leads of seven on multiple occasions during that opening frame. Taisha Murphy canned a triple as the first quarter clock was winding down to make it just a three-point deficit for the Spiders.
Hubbard canned a triple right out of the gates in the second quarter to knot the score but Mason answered with a runner in the lane and once again raced out to a seven-point advantage, 27-20, with 6:46 left in the half. Murphree collected a layup a few minutes later but the Patriots built their largest lead of the game at that point, 30-22, just before the media timeout at the 4:19 mark. The deficit grew to nine following a Mason three ball at the three-minute mark and that's when the switch was flipped.
Hubbard hit a jumper on her next attempt then a good defensive effort lead to another Hubbard fading jumper to cut it to a five-point game with 1:47 left in the half. Murphree stepped into a triple and cut the deficit to just two with 1:03 left and the Spiders settled in on defense. With the shot clock off and the game clock winding down, Mason was trying to hold for the last shot when Taisha Murphy came up with huge strip and steal, she found Hubbard in transition who tossed up a runner was the buzzer was about to sound that fell, making it a 9-0 run to close the half with the score tied, 33-33.
The third quarter was slow going and it turned into a trading of baskets most of the way. A Murphree triple, her second of the game, made it a one-point Mason lead heading into the fourth quarter where the Spiders would be faced with the 0-14 record they brought into this game when trailing after three quarters.
It was then that Jaide Hinds-Clarke decided to exert her will. She scored six-straight for the Spiders to push her team ahead by four, 52-48, with 7:50 left before Hubbard got involved with a pair of free throws. Richmond built an 11-point lead with a massive run before the Patriots cut it to nine with 5:51 to go. The Spiders then pushed it right back to 13 and managed to hold off the hard-charging Patriots down the stretch to secure the win.
Richmond now returns home to square off with UMass in the Robins Center looking to even its record in A-10 play. That game is set for a 7 p.m. tip and will serve as this season's annual breast cancer awareness “pink” game.
